COURSE OVERVIEW

What makes a good black and white photograph? At the heart is the ability to "see" our color world in black & white. Learning this skill takes good instruction and practice. In this course, you receive both as you're guided through projects at a reasonable pace while developing your eye for black and white imagery. Classroom instruction will include
pre-visualization, b&w composition, color to b&w conversion, digital effects and techniques.

We will look at both the camera controls and exposure techniques needed to capture workable image files for B&W process. Through in-studio shooting & assignment projects, you will explore a variety of subject matter from landscapes, portraits, spaces and objects as well as a Concept Project expressing an idea with visual emotion.

Many students who have taken this class say it is a "break-through" class where your creativity and technical skills combine to bring your photography to the next level.608=

THEIA YOUTH PHOTOGRPAHY and PHOTO ADVENTURE FRIDAY's
4 Sessions starting July 11th...9am-1:00pm
https://theia-studios.com/youth-programs-school-vacation/

At THEIA Youth Photography Program our goal is to deliver a photo-based art education program in a fun, inspiring and energetic format. We believe that “learning by doing” as well as moving the mind and body makes a more lasting imprint. We also believe that fostering kids creativity builds self-awareness and confidence.

Guided by experienced photographers/educators, students enjoy fun, hands-on projects designed to engage and motivate while learning the basics of photography and videography. Classes typically have a 5:1 student/teacher ratio and in some cases, even lower. We feel keeping our groups smaller allows for more individual attention and cultivates stronger group participation.

Students learn the ever-lasting skill of image making as well as effective techniques to artistically express themselves. Each week features exciting projects such as creating sun prints, making pin-hole cameras, working in different camera formats, photo scavenger hunts and much more! All the while reinforcing basic camera skills so that regardless of the weeks attended, no one is left behind.

We also offer Photo Adventure Friday (& picnic) which is optional and can be added on to any week. During these walks we will explore a particular location, having fun shooting and learning together. We will stop for a snack and water break as well as a picnic box lunch at the end.

Wrapping inspiration around learning is the culture at THEIA. What emerges from our approach is an exciting exploration of individual creativity and self-expression through art.

Photo Adventure Friday -4 walks starting July 15th from 9am-12:00pm ALL AGES
https://theia-studios.com/youth-programs-school-vacation/

Our Photo Adventure Fridays are separate from the structured weekly programs and can be enjoyed by anyone. You don't have to be enrolled in a weekly program to sign up. If you are enrolled in a weekly program, simply add this on to your selection when registering. All ages are welcome and will be divided into specific age groups upon arrival.

Guided by multiple instructors, each Friday we will meet at a specified location (local) and explore the area exclusively. We will review and lightly instruct on basic photography, videography & composition. This experience is less about verbal instruction and more about the opportunity to get out in nature, “see what we can see” with our cameras, and engage
with the world around us.

We will provide light snacks and water during our walk. At the conclusion, we will rest and enjoy a boxed lunch* and casual conversation. Pick up will be at the specified location.

A brief description: Photographers are fiercely motivated to communicate what is visually important to them! We live in a wonderful time where we have the technology to create images easily. But to create images that are consistently significant is not automatic, or easy. If you were to select your 5 most favorite photos that you have ever captured, and then ALSO the 5 or so most favorite photos that OTHER photographers have taken (your all-star faves), how would they be alike? What would they have in common? How close to communicating something significant would yours be to those all time favorites? What made those favorite photos your favorite? And…how can we as photographers progress to consistently creating images that have this kind of impact?

My class, "The Deliberate Photograph", is an exploration and a discovery of that essence which to you is personally and visually important; how to see it in the world, how to form it on the two dimensional canvas, then to consistently communicate this through the vocabulary of photography. You will bring those images to the small community of the class for this discovery process, and then create new images with impact that you'll capture in the best time to be in Maine! It will be inclusive of all forms of photography; Black and White, Color, Digital, Film....we will even cover the significance of Black and White as part of the visual vocabulary.

I've had the privilege of lecturing and teaching all across the US (been to all 50 states!), at such diverse places as a studio in Rapid City, SD, to numerous trade shows, a couple of Nuclear Aircraft Carriers underway at sea, a myriad of NASA installations, Air Force Bases, Naval Air Stations, the Pentagon, as well as guiding the Explorers of Light at Canon USA for nearly 11 years. It's still uplifting to share knowledge and inspiration!

As to what Maine Media Workshops are all about; imagine a summer camp for photographers! Complete immersion in the world of developing a deeper understanding of the craft of photography, on the coast of Maine.

Best wishes, Steve The Deliberate Photograph
