Fine Art Compositing and Business with Brooke Shaden

Fine Art Compositing and Business with Brooke Shaden
When March 19, 2018 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Location Clarion Hotel, 1230 Congress St, Portland, ME

This intensive one-day class will dive into many different shooting setups that will lead to seamless composited images. From shooting on a plain backdrop and moving the subject somewhere else entirely, to drastically enhancing a scene that we set ourselves, we will learn how to take an image from boring to extraordinary through the use of creative shooting techniques and Photoshop. Everyone will have the chance to edit along and will receive an hour-long image editing tutorial at the end of the class to take home. Finally, we will talk about how to brand, market, and sell your images in the fine art world and beyond. You will learn:

1. How to move subjects to a different background.
2. How to add more images to your original to create an enhanced photograph.
3. How to manipulate light and color in Photoshop.
4. How to license your images and sell them through galleries.
5. How to print, edition, and choose paper for your prints.
6. How to brand and market your work.

Karen Davis will give a presentation at the Westport Art Group 1740 Main Road, on Friday, August 25

Karen Davis, photographer, teacher and gallery co-owner of the Davis Orton Gallery in Hudson NY, will give a presentation at the Westport Art Group 1740 Main Road, on Friday, August 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. Karen was the juror for WAG's June photography kick off exhibit. She has taught at the Radcliffe Seminars, Lesley University and the Griffin Museum of Photography.

Her topic will be visual memoir and family fictions: photographic series and single images that reveal the family in fine art photography. Her presentation will include images of 20th and 21st artists such as Carrie Mae Weems, Larry Sultan, Sage Sohier, Philip-Lorca DiCorcia, Gregory Crewdson and Tina Barney as well as work that hasn’t made it into the history books but are worthy and help expand our vision of ways to approach these subjects. Additionally, she will offer critique of work brought by attendees to the event.

Photographers interested in learning different approaches to story and memoir should not miss this opportunity. Attendees must register at info@westportartgroup.com by August 15th. A $5 donation is suggested.

Thank you!

First Time Attendee Experience

First Time Attendee Experience

Are you a first time attendee?
or an attendee who has come many time and would not miss this conference?
Email photographer67 [at] comcast.net and tell your story, we would love to feature you (and share your images)!
How did you hear about the conference?  What did you like best? What program(s) was/were your favorite? Did you photograph the setups, glassware, insects, animals, models, etc?  What recommendation would you have for other people?

Thanks to the Shutter-Buds, I had the opportunity to attend my first New England Camera Club Council (NECCC) annual meeting held at UMass in Amherst. This year marked the 72nd meeting. I definitely plan to go back.

What a joy living like a college student again by staying in a dorm and being on the meal plan. Living conditions have improved since I was a student. It's the adult camp for photographers.

The conference was three days of presentations by the best photographers (Bryan Peterson, Jack Reznicki, Roman Kurywczak, Andre Gallant, Bob Krist, Charles Needle & Paula Swift) to name a few. Topics included travel, nature, wildlife, sports, portrait, photographing water, photographing children, photojournalism, and landscape design. Post processing topics included Experiencing all the Colors of Black and White, Lightroom Mobile & Tethering, When, Where & How to Sharpen, Painterly Effects with Textures, and Crafting your Images with Plug-Ins. All the conference notes were available for purchase in one spiral binder.

Hunt’s Photo (a sponsor of Shutter-Buds) was there with vendors from all the big companies (Nikon, Cannon, Tamron, Panasonic, Sigma, Sony, & Lensbaby). Attendees had the opportunity to test a lens on loan. Not only were there discounts on all merchandise, there was the opportunity to speak with the different vendor experts & try out the equipment before purchasing.

There were photo opportunities where attendees could use their personal camera to shoot models, fancy insects, glassware in 3 forms: high color, black light & dark field, & floral techniques. On Sunday morning attendees had the opportunity to shoot 4 different FMX stunt motorcycle jumpers who performed non-shop for an hour.

Cannon provided a free 19x13 inch print to those attendees who brought a flash drive of their favorite file. Precision Camera cleaned cameras of all brands at no charge. There were door prizes, photo competitions, speaker books and video sales, and so much more.

There is so much information at the conference that one cannot do it all. I listed some of the highlights. I strongly urge all Shutter-Buds to consider going to the NECCC's 73rd conference July 13th through 15th, 2018 at UMass in Amherst. The conference inspires attendees to get out and try different techniques.

    Hercules beetle

Kathy Macpherson Baca had an awesome Hercules beetle at photo ops #neccc this year

Watch until the end : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioHmlMvpcNQ

Many people asked about beetles - they are larvae first, they go thru a lot to become a beetle
if you get any cool photos from Kathy's creepy con session please make sure to share them on the NECCC Facebook page (#NECCC) and tag Kathy

"Life cycle -- The larval stage of the Hercules beetle will last one to two years, with the larva growing up to 4.5 inches (11 cm) in length and weighing more than 100 grams. Much of the life of the larva is spent tunneling through rotting wood. After the larval period, transformation into a pupa, and moulting, the beetle then emerges as an adult."

"Diet -- The larval stage of the Hercules beetle will feed on rotting wood during this two year stage. The adult Hercules beetle feeds on fresh and rotting fruit. They have been observed feeding on peaches, pear, apple, and grapes within captivity.""

    Mark your calendar July 13, 14, 15 2018!!

Hi, I am a First Time Attendee and loved being there. Here are some of my favorite images from the event.

I am a member of the Portland Camera Club and heard about the Conference there. For me, there really no one program I favored. I just enjoyed the “experience” itself of having the opportunity to enjoy great speakers, photograph live events as well as the models and photo op setups.

Did you photograph the setups, glassware, insects, animals, models, etc?
Yes, I did indeed take advantage of most of those opportunities and have included images in addition to the ones I sent to you the other day.

The best advice I can give others is to take the time to “plan” as much as you can in advance of the meeting to set up a schedule for yourself. I went through all the speaker notes in advance which was also a big help. I was pleased to receive warm thanks you from several of the models after sending them my favorite images I had made. Very rewarding since this was my first time making images of live models.

Thank you to you and the Team that put this program together.

New Book: Create Fine Art Photographs from Historic Places and Rusty Things

Wahoo!! Our book Create Fine Art Photographs from Historic Places and Rusty Things, has arrived from the publisher!! The book was supposed to be released Sept 15th but it is HERE three months early! Wow, so excited !!

You can order  “Create Fine Art Photographs from Historic Places and Rusty Things” here using the QR code or directly from Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/lisatom-urbex]

Lisa and Tom Cuchara see the beauty in decay and abandonment. In this book, they take you on a guided journey of historic, grand, dramatic, and unique locations and provide tips to help you capture creative fine-art photographs of rusty, dusty subjects and locations. In this book, you’ll find a plethora of urban exploration images and discover the processes used to create each one. You’ll learn how to capture HDR images, create long-exposure photos, and paint with light. You’ll also learn how to approach challenging locations, deal with high contrast scenes, create stitched HDR panoramics, and produce light and shadow effects. The authors share the gear that was used, the camera settings, the story behind the scene, and how they pre-visualized their images and looked for light (or created it) in each location. This book will inspire you to visit new “old” places and to get to know them well enough to tell their story.

EN-EL15 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery Pack Recall

    Nikon Users...

EN-EL15 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery Pack Recall

UPDATED EN-EL15 SERVICE ADVISORY AS OF JUNE 20, 2017. Technical Service Advisory for users of the EN-EL15 rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack
Nikon Inc. is asking your cooperation in connection with a voluntary recall of certain lot numbers of its Nikon Model EN-EL15 rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack can experience a short circuit causing it to overheat and possibly causing the outside casing to become deformed, posing a potential hazard to consumers. There have only been seven (7) confirmed reports of incidents of the problem worldwide, and while no injuries have taken place, Nikon Inc. has initiated this recall of the affected lot numbers as a reflection of its commitment to safety and product quality. We are asking that owners of the affected battery pack contact Nikon Inc. to initiate a free product exchange.
The Nikon EN-EL15 battery pack is provided as a supplied accessory with the purchase of Nikon’s digital SLR D800, D800E, D810A, D810, D610, D600, D7200, D7100, D7000, D500 cameras and the Nikon 1 V1 advanced camera with interchangeable lens. However, EN-EL15 batteries supplied with D810A, D810, D610, D600, D500, D7200, D7100 are not included in this voluntary recall. It is also sold separately at retail under Nikon’s model number 27011. The EN-EL15 battery pack involved in this recall was first distributed by Nikon in March 2012 and is still being sold at retail.
No other Nikon battery packs are involved in this recall.
Nikon’s digital SLR D800, D800E, D810A, D810, D610, D600, D7200, D7100, D7000, D500 cameras and the Nikon 1 V1 advanced camera with interchangeable lens as well as any other Nikon cameras are also not subject to this recall.

    What you should do:
1.) Determine if your EN-EL15 battery pack is affected
This voluntary recall is limited to EN-EL15 battery packs in lots E and F. First, please confirm that “EN-EL15” is printed on the label of your battery pack. Then, please locate the 14-digit lot number beside the recycle symbol, as shown on the photo below.
    • If the 9th character of the lot number is E or F, your battery is among those being recalled.
    • If the 9th character of the lot number is any other letter, your battery is not affected by this recall.
Click here to use our lot number lookup tool.
2.) If your EN-EL15 battery pack is affected
    • Immediately remove the battery from your camera or camera bag, but please do not dispose of it.
    • Complete the Nikon's online EN-EL15 battery exchange form by clicking the button below.
    • Once your request is processed Nikon will send a confirmation email.
    • On the day of your battery exchange, UPS will contact you by phone and email notifying you of the delivery.
    • A UPS courier will then deliver your new battery pack(s) AND collect the recalled battery pack(s).
    • Someone needs to be present for this exchange. If you need to make special arrangements, please contact UPS.
    Exchange My EN-EL15 Battery
3.) If your EN-EL15 battery pack is not affected
No further action is needed. Please continue using your EN-EL15 battery pack as usual.
Nikon is committed to safety and to providing to its customers only the highest quality products. We regret any inconvenience this matter may cause you and appreciate your continued support of Nikon and its products.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact Nikon at 1-800-645-6687.
