NECCC needs your feedback!

Tom and I thank each and every one of you for attending the 74th annual NECCC photo conference. Tom used his Good Humor (pun) to work with Conference Services to reward people that walked to Thompson on Friday and Herter on Saturday with Free Good Humor ice cream!

The conference runs smoothly because there are so many people involved. The red shirts always work very hard, but this year they had to tear down three entire room setups and setup three new rooms because Thompson's A/C went down. From reading your paper comments you all were very understanding of the emergency at Thompson and the hard work spent relocating those rooms.

Next year is the 75th Annual NECCC photo conference, so please bring a friend!

We hope to have lots of interactive and hands-on activities. We do read each and every feedback form, and we welcome suggestions for speakers, photo ops, etc. Have speakers send in program or photo ops proposals here: www.surveymonkey.com/r/speakatNECCC.
  • Please complete our online 2019 photo conference survey. We are looking for as much feedback as possible. The survey lists the programs, pre-conference workshops, conference workshops and photowalks , along with questions that do not appear on the short paper survey. We have been getting lots of ideas for the 75th-- a tshirt design contest, a scavenger hunt, a commemorative pin, a new vendor, and more. Keep the ideas flowing!
  • Mark your calendars for the 75th Annual NECCC photo conference July 17, 18, 19 (2020)

  • Please be sure to subscribe to the NECCC blog
    • http://necccnews.blogspot.com/p/subscribe.html
    • If you are in a camera club your rep should be updating its members about NECCC blogposts at each meeting.
    • Many of you are not in a camera club, so the blog is your primary communication.
    • NECCC wants to post your local (greater New England area) photo event!
      • Send an email with "for the NECCC Blog" in the subject line to photographer67 [at] comcast.net and we will let the entire New England area know about it!

SCSU's Drone Academy Launching September 14

Southern Connecticut State University is very pleased to announce the launch of our fall 2019 Drone Academy program launching on September 14, 2019

This five-module, non-credit program is geared towards working professionals who are interested in gaining the skills needed for safe drone aviation, preparation to successfully pass the FAA exam, techniques for making quality aerial stills                    and videos using Photoshop and Final Cut Pro, and a better understanding of Px4d software for landscape mapping and 3D modeling. Each module is able to be completed as a stand-alone option and participants can customize the program depending on their particular areas of interest. Some modules have pre-requisites, which are listed below in the descriptions.

The video and photographic capabilities of aerial drones have a demonstrated benefit for police departments, fire departments, real estate agents, journalists, public works officers, surveyors, insurance adjusters, public utilities, and more.                   SCSU’s Drone Academy will provide a value-add for both the working professional, as well as the hobbyist, looking to take their skills to the next level.

This is the only program in our region where participants can learn all of this information in one comprehensive package.  Register today as space is limited - SCSU Drone Academy.

2019-2020 Electronic Photograph Interclub Competitions (New)

2019-2020 Electronic Photograph Interclub Competitions (New)
Go to http://www.neccc.org/p/interclub-competition.html for new documents and pdfs

2019-2020 Electronic Photograph Interclub Competitions

NECCC has had thirteen successful seasons for the Pictorial and twelve successful seasons for the Nature categories of the Electronic Photograph Interclub Competition. For the 2019-2020 season the size is being changed to a maximum of 1400 pixels horizontally and 1050 pixels vertically. In addition there are several reminders that are detailed below.

• Because of requirements for the web based entry system each club must register by Sept. 15, 2019, so that the internal tables can be updated before the site is opened for Fall competition entries. (See rule number 5 in the competition rules document for details about the information needed.)

• Last season we had a number of cases where we received two entries for an individual who belongs to more than one club in one of the categories in violation of rule #4. In a couple of cases we even received two entries for one individual from the same club. We routinely check each category to be sure an individual is not entered twice in a category for each competition. If that happens we will attempt to determine which club has the individual’s permission to use his/her entries and disqualify the other entry. Each club rep has the responsibility to check with his/her members to be sure that only a single club is using their entries for each competition.

• It is also the club rep’s responsibility to determine the images that may have been entered previously for an individual when competing from another club. When we check images for possible previous use it doesn’t matter which club entered it previously. It is understood that this may be a daunting task, and may be difficult to verify every image, every time. However if duplicates are received, the Co-Directors have no choice but to disqualify this duplication. We do this in order to maintain an even playing field for all competing clubs.

• Note, we have also had problems with different images being entered, but with the same title as previous entries. In that case we attempt to determine if the images are in fact different before disqualifying the new one. Please emphasize to your members the importance of using unique titles for all their images.

• It is important the Host Clubs return our score spreadsheets with no changes except to add the scores. We have had clubs that sent score sheets they designed themselves or used programs such as Mac Numbers. When that happens we have to copy the scores to our spreadsheets so that they will work within the rest of our system. Your cooperation will be appreciated.

• Class assignments are the same as the 2018-2019 season except for the Seacoast and Seven Hills Camera Clubs that move from class B to class A in pictorial and Manchester Camera Club that moves from class B to class A in nature. These were the winning clubs in class B for the 2018-2019 season.

1. The following documents with all the competition details can be found on the NECCC web site at
http://www.neccc.org/p/interclub-competition.html.

3. Electronic Photograph Interclub Competition Rules

4. Electronic Photograph Interclub Competition Instructions for Host Clubs

5. Electronic Photograph Interclub Competition Information for Judges

6. Instructions for Using the Web-based Image Upload System for the Electronic Interclub Competition

The upload site is located at http://cgburke.com/neccc/.

7. An alignment image to be used to check that your projector is showing the complete image. This image is exactly 1400 x 1050 pixels in size and has a one pixel wide stroke around the entire image. If that stroke is not visible on all four sides your projector needs adjustment which can easily be performed through the projector’s menu system. This is supplied primarily for host clubs to check their projectors before their 2019-2020 Electronic Photograph Interclub Competitions competition night, but it is also available to any club that wants to be sure it’s projector is adjusted properly.

Note that this is new for this season since the dimensions changed.

Participating clubs will receive a reminder e-mail in plenty of time to submit entries for each competition assuming they meet the September 15, 2019, registration date.

Results will be returned to the club’s contact person(s) by e-mail as soon as possible after the competition has been judged. Remember that no make ups are permitted so be sure to send your entries well before each closing date so that if there are any problems they can be resolved in a timely fashion. Each entry will be automatically acknowledged by return e-mail after it has be received and checked by the web site software. Watch for the return e-mail and inquire if the receipt isn’t received within a reasonable time. It is important to monitor your entries to be sure they were received and are correct. If you have any problems with the entry system notify us and we will help. If you make a mistake in the entry let us know so we can fix the files on our end.

Before I tell you about the film copier, I am going to take a moment to relate some of my experiences at the NECCC conference in Amherst, MA last week. If you have never heard of the NECCC conference I would be amazed.  Next year will be the 75th anniversary of the conference. That is an amazing feat! This year there were 39 speakers covering a wide variety of topics.  There are lectures, photo shoots, portfolio reviews and more. There is something for every photographer.

I had a great time, especially getting to spend time with some old friends (Adam Jones, Jamie Konarski Davidson, Sean Bagshaw, Suzette Allen, Shiv Verma, and more) and making some new ones (Karen Hutton, David Akoubian, Kurt Budliger, and Padma Inguva). One of the highlights was the excellent keynote presentation by Nikon Ambassador, Kristi OdomIf you ever get the opportunity to hear her speak, don’t miss it!

Wingmasters Birds of Prey Outdoor Photography Sessions

Wingmasters Birds of Prey Outdoor Photography Sessions

Did you enjoy photos at NECCC last weekend of Wingmasters Birds of Prey -- and want to take more photos?

I am organizing a few two hour photography trips to Wingmasters (Leverett, MA close to Amherst) with photo shoots from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.  The dates are Sunday, October 27th (rain date of Sunday, November 3rd) and then Saturday, November 9th (rain date Sunday, November 10th).   We will meet near South Deerfield, MA and then all of us will head to Leverett, MA where we will meet Jim, Julie and their Birds of Prey.  We should have the chance to photograph owls, hawks, and falcons.  I have led many trips to their location and you can’t ask for much more than what Jim and Julie offer.  They are both artists and will put most of the birds in trees with the jesses/leashes hidden which allows for some great photos!  They even put screech owls together for the first time!

We will meet around 8:15 a.m or 12:15 p.m. and then travel to Leverett with photographing from 9-11 a.m. or 1-3 p.m. at Wingmasters.  The trip is limited to 10 people and the cost is $60 per person.

Please contact Debbie Koundry to reserve your spot at 203-558-2372 or email ddonofrio@snet.net.  I expect slots will fill quickly, however, I do run a wait list and in the past I have been able to get people onto an actual shoot.

From Wingmasters website:
Wingmasters is a partnership of two people dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey.  Julie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed raptor rehabilitators based in Massachusetts.  Together they care for injured birds of prey.  Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild, but in some cases the birds are left permanently handicapped.  Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these nonreleasable raptors, and to use them for educational programs.  Since 1994 Wingmasters has presented over 5000 programs at schools, libraries and museums throughout New England.

Thank you,
Debbie

A little history…

Three generations of Farber family ownership have established Hunt’s as a trendsetter in the imaging equipment industry. Begun as a Malden Center drugstore by pharmacist Solomon Farber and his sons, Hunt’s began building its camera business during the 1950s under the visionary leadership of Solomon’s son, Jack. As interest in photography grew and small neighborhood pharmacies fell victim to big national chains, Hunt’s began shifting its emphasis away from the pharmacy business and into the business of cameras and accessories. By 1992, the pharmacy closed and imaging equipment became Hunt’s primary focus.

Led today by Jack’s sons, Scott and Gary, Hunt’s proudly serves a diverse audience of individual, corporate, educational, and government clients as one of the country’s largest retailers of photographic, video and digital imaging products. As the sponsor of the renowned Hunt’s Show and Sale each fall, the company hosts a three-day showcase of the latest trends in photographic equipment for users at all levels. Visit Hunt’s 30,000 square foot flagship store at 100 Main Street, Melrose, or one of its satellite locations in Boston, MA – Cambridge, MA – Hanover, MA – Holyoke, MA – Providence, RI – So. Posing tips for your family portrait someone sent this to me in an email so I have no photo credits, but too funny not to share ...

Place taller family members in the back; shorter ones in front

Encourage family members to touch, showing a loving connection

Parents should always coordinate clothing

Best described as a Photographic Artist, Ed’s passion, enthusiasm and love for photography is beautifully reflected in his creative, storytelling portraits. Dating back to the age of twelve, when he received his first camera as a gift from his parents, photography has been his passion. In 1992, following a twenty-five year career with the US Government, Ed took a leap of faith and followed his dream of pursuing a career in photography. Happily, he never looked back. Several years in to his career, he discovered his true love was photographing family and children and this became his photographic specialty.
Through Ed’s extreme commitment and dedication to his craft, he has earned a reputation as one of New England’s premiere family portrait photographers. His calm nature and friendly, outgoing personality is embraced by children and adults alike who feel naturally relaxed in his presence. His playful, childlike nature and his patience in working with children, enables him to create images that evoke real life emotion and capture true feelings.
In 2005, following a 30 year insurance career; Linda joined the studio full time. Her primary role includes the marketing, bookkeeping and general PR for the business but she is also an invaluable assistant to Ed during their portrait sessions.
Together they take great pride in creating a friendly, stress free atmosphere, providing superior customer service and capturing exceptional portraits of the many special moments in a family’s life. Their goal is simple and heartfelt…To build a long and trusted relationship with your family and to create portrait memories that will be treasured today and passed down to future generations to come. True personal ‘Works of Art’, far more precious and valuable than any possession one can own.

Studio

The studio is located in a quaint-residential area of North Andover, MA. It was designed to convey a family type atmosphere and provide children with an immediate sense of comfort and security. The Indoor studio offers endless portrait opportunities and is very popular for expectant mothers, newborns, toddlers, first communion and high school seniors.
One of the studio’s most appealing attractions is its beautifully landscaped outdoor studio areas. Featuring a variety of environmental settings including; a gazebo, tree lined pathways, old fashioned stonewalls, colorful foliage and ever changing flower gardens. In 2007, a water pond was added and has become a popular setting for themed children’s portraits as well as family portraits.

Awards

Ed’s portraits have received many photographic excellence honors including Courts of Honor, Judges Choice for best print in show, FUJI Masterpiece, and Kodak Gallery Awards. His work has been exhibited at Disney Worlds Epcot Center in Orlando, FL and published in PPA’s annual Loan Collection book. Ed is committed to his craft and dedicated to his profession.

Degrees

He holds the degrees of Master Photographer, Photographic Craftsman and is PPA Certified.
