These episodes are free and open to everyone. You Be the Judge Miniseries - Episode 2 Making Competitive Nature Images In this program, Richard Cloran (HonFPSA, GMPSA, HonNEC) will explore the key aspects of a successful competitive nature image and what separates them from an otherwise good nature image. Each of the key aspects is covered in short, easily remembered points. These points are then reinforced with multiple examples using images that have and have not been successful at local, interclub and international exhibition levels. This program is intended to build on and complement the January miniseries program on evaluating nature images. It approaches that same core from the perspective of the maker with a goal of giving prospective entrants a better understanding of why an image may or may not succeed in a nature competition run under the PSA (Photographic Society of America) definition. Rick is a past Chairman of the PSA Nature Division, Director if the PSA Nature Division’s Subject Identification Service, a Commentator for PSA’s ND2 (Nature) Study Group, a frequent judge of Nature International Exhibition sections, and a contributor to the current Nature Definition and the Nature Photography Judge’s Guide. The NECCC "You Be the Judge" Miniseries of educational discussions and presentations is designed to enhance the experience of participating in camera club competitions. These episodes are free and open to everyone.

Episode 1 - Evaluating Nature Images

In this one-hour program, Rick Cloran (HonFPSA, GMPSA, HonNEC) will delve into the rules and guidelines for nature photography competitions as defined by the PSA-FIAP (Photographic Society of America – International Federation of Photographic Art). He will also share his personal insights on how to approach evaluating and commenting on nature images, and what makes a successful competitive nature photograph stand out. To illustrate his points, Rick will use a variety of images that have or have not achieved success at different levels of competition, including local, interclub, and international exhibitions. If you’re in need of a creative jolt for your photography, then join outdoor photographer Colleen Miniuk for this motivational presentation where she’ll share her insights on how to record unique and personally meaningful images that transcend the cliché. Learn tips and tricks for tapping into individual knowledge, passions, and mindful observations as you explore your surroundings and for connecting with your subjects on a deeper level no matter where your travels take you. After all, as Henry David Thoreau once said, “It’s not what you look at that matters; it’s what you see.” 

 

Part Two: Image Critique

All participants are invited to submit up two images for the critique session. Colleen will give constructive feedback on the images, offering new ideas on how to approach your photography, polish your pictures and refine your skills. We can’t guarantee everyone’s images will be selected for review, but everyone should find the comments helpful for their own photography.
