Fall 2016 Inter-club Print Competition

Fall 2016 Inter-club Print Competition
Reported by Arthur S. Vaughan, HonNEC
NECCC Print Chairman

The fall 2016 inter-club print competition, hosted by the Eastern Maine Camera Club, was held on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Dysart’s Restaurant (Grand Laker Room), Bangor, Maine. The judges for this competition were: Patrick Downey, John Foster, and Thomas Morelli.

Patrick Downey, a landscape photographer was born and raised in the Acadia National Park area of Maine. His photos have been published in numerous national magazines and he has won numerous awards for his work, including Honorable Mention in Outdoor Photographer Magazine’s premier photo contest “The American Landscape”. Patrick travels extensively to scenic areas of the U.S. for photographic work but always returns to his home state of Maine.

John Foster is the owner of Foster Imaging, Maine’s oldest photo-finisher, serving professional photographers since 1985. He is the first to bring large format digital printing to New England.

Thomas Morelli is a full time portrait and wedding photographer who has been in the business for over thirty six years. He was awarded Maine Photographer of the Year in 2003 by the the Maine Professional Photographers Association.

Holding the print competition at a restaurant having event rooms made it convenient for rounds one and two to be run first, with a meal break of 30 minutes, followed by rounds three and four. The competition took about two hours to complete, with an additional 30 minutes for the dinner break. Sharing competition tasks were... Sally Arata, Jeanne Caron, Kevin Doyle, Alice Frati, Joel Holcomb, Kathy Lena, and Larry Sherwood. Many thanks go to the Eastern Maine Camera Club, the judges, competition support staff, and Dysart’s Restaurant for making this event possible.

layne kennedy photo tours

Hello New England Camera Club Council,

It was brought to our attention from some friends in Portsmouth, N.H. to drop you a note. I recently taught a class there for the Worldwide Mentor Series Photo Treks.

I do a number of workshops and photo tours. Many are right here in the Midwest, but I also do workshops for the Mentor Series (http://www.popphoto.com/mentorseries)
and the famed North House Folk School where I both tach teach and serve on its Board (http://www.northhouse.org/).

I also run several of my own as well. We just finished our second of three tours in Cuba and also will be running my 24th Annual Dogsledding PhotoWorkshop at Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge
again this year. http://www.dogsledding.com/photo-workshop

Buckets of fun on each and every one. Here's the latest promo for the next tour.

Here's a few other articles written up:  http://www.fusevisual.org/interviews/2014/7/13/layne-kennedy,  http://121clicks.com/interviews/interview-with-layne-kennedy-editorial-and-fine-art-photographer

Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

Portraits, Unplugged with Bobbi Lane & Lee Varis

Learn how to engage your subjects, use natural light and come away with dynamic portraits,

Portraits, Unplugged with Bobbi Lane & Lee Varis
http://wbhunt.com/blog/portraits-unplugged/

Portraits, Unplugged with Bobbi Lane & Lee Varis
Working with Natural Light to Make Flattering & Dynamic Portraits
Sat & Sun October 15th & 16th, 9am-6pm
Hunt’s Photo, Melrose, MA

Recommended Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of cameras
Class Level: Beyond Basic

Portraits Unplugged is all about natural light, nothing technical or mechanical. Bobbi teaches you how to find and work with natural light to make flattering and dynamic portraits of any subject. The beauty of available light is its ability to describe your subject from powerful and strong to soft and creamy. We scout locations for the light and we look for options that can surprise us with its complexity as well as find the simple and clean look for smooth skin tones.
UnpluggedHunts-7114The most important part of our photograph is not the subject, but how we, as visual artists, choose to define our subject. We work on capturing the essence of the people by the use of posing, expressions, tonality, composition, color, backgrounds and props. Bobbi shows you how to work with all kinds of light: hard, soft, bounced, window, “garage door”, reflected, diffused, etc. Our only tools are reflectors and diffusers and we use them to manipulate the light effectively.

Lee will take the captured images to the next level with Lightroom and Photoshop enhancement techniques on skin for quick fixes and complete makeovers that don’t require special artistic talent, but instead utilize the power inherent in the basic software without extra plug-ins or extensions.

This workshop will raise your level of awareness and help you be a better natural light photographer.

Students must be familiar with their cameras and lenses. A medium telephoto lens if suggested.

The Ultimate 4-Day Landscape Photography Workshop

Do you have a lovely DSLR camera but never have time to really enjoy it and learn its secrets?  Travel Vision Journeys, a photo tour company based in Arlington, is offering a fantastic photography workshop this fall.  It's a perfect gift to yourself or to someone you love - see the best scenes of a New England autumn in a new light!

The workshop is called “The Ultimate 4-Day Landscape Photography Workshop” and uses the colorful fall landscapes of New England as its inspiration from October 28th through 31st.

Your instructor will be Ossian Lindholm, a professional landscape photographer from Argentina. He will share his 40 years of photography experience with each student through daily critiques and mind-provoking one-on-one meetings.

Space in the workshop is limited in order to give participants plenty of attention, and also to build a collegial group atmosphere concluding with a festive celebration dinner. The New England workshop will culminate with an Argentinean feast at Tango in Arlington.

More information about the curriculum and workshop pricing - and about several FREE talks occurring this fall - is available at: http://travelvisionjourneys.com/about-us/special-events/

one-day judging workshop on November 5th

Registration opens for annual small-group one-day judging workshop on November 5th

A long-running, fully participative small-group one-day workshop, So You Want To Be A Judge (or Better Understand Them) is designed to help current judges polish their skills as well as introduce others who have not yet been in the judge’s seat to the art and experience of judging and critiquing competitions. This 2016 workshop will be held only once in 2016 from 9:00am to 3:30pm on November 5, 2016 at the Cape Cod Art Association in Hyannis, MA. Led by CCAA Master Artist Bob Singer who has been a judge at PSA international salons, NECCC salons, camera clubs, art galleries and magazine competitions for over thirty years, this unique workshop interactively involves you as it refines your judging and critiquing skills, “seeing,” understanding and insights.  Because judging workshop attendees come from across New England, registration for this workshop will close at noon on Friday, October 28th.  Please register early as workshop participation is limited to maximize its value to attendees. Registration fee: $50.

Out of New York Conference Friday and Saturday October 14 and 15, 2016

Out of New York Conference Friday and Saturday October 14 and 15, 2016

We are getting close to the Out of New York conference, October 14 & 15th In NYC at CUNY in Manhattan.  We've created a code, GARY50 which will actually get you $100 off of the $349 price for the event, bringing this awesome conference for $249!  With this fee, you will have access to multiple classroom sessions and many photowalks are included too.  If your members choose to attend a smaller, more intimate photowalk, there may be additional fees.

I'd like to let you know ahead of time too, that anyone who signs up will get a $75 credit towards any of these walks or the water taxi tour on Thursday evening from 4:30-7pm.  We have many exciting additions to the classroom setting like a photowalk with Lindsay Adler to her personal studio, walks to DUMBO, the High Line, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Grand Central, and so many more locations!  I sure hope to see you there and appreciate you passing on the word to anyone interested in photography.

Feel free to pass on my email, malinda@outofchicago.com, to anyone who has questions.  I would love to help them out and share my excitement for the event!

Send them to outofnewyork.com for more information and to register, outofchicago.com to learn more about us and our other upcoming events, and I'd like to invite them to join our Facebook group, https://www.facebook.com/groups/1056113057743097 where they will be part of a great photographic community!

Are you familiar with the Out of Chicago Photography Conference?  They’ve put together the most amazing, inspiring, and fun photography conference for 3 years now downtown Chicago.  It’s gone so well, they’ve decided to expand this amazing event by bringing it to New York City.

As the “Shooting-est Photography Conference on Earth”, not only will you learn in a classroom setting with photographers like Lindsay Adler, Bryan Peterson, Rick Sammon, Valerie Jardin, and MORE, but they’ll also take you on the streets of Manhattan to use what you learn!  One of the many reasons for its success is the smaller, more intimate class size.  You will be in a classroom with no more than 40- 60 people (other than the keynote speakers), and you will be able to interact with your favorite instructors!

Out of New York is set for Friday and Saturday October 14 and 15, 2016.  Included in your fee is 2 full days of classes along with many social photowalks to choose from.  There will also be opportunities for educational, smaller photowalks for an additional charge.  Check out the Sunday, full day on-the-street workshops too! Sign up at www.outofnewyork.com or email malinda@outofchicago.com for more information.

We look forward to seeing you in New York City!!

Chris, Malinda, and Michelle
