Out of New York Conference Friday and Saturday October 14 and 15, 2016

Out of New York Conference Friday and Saturday October 14 and 15, 2016

We are getting close to the Out of New York conference, October 14 & 15th In NYC at CUNY in Manhattan.  We've created a code, GARY50 which will actually get you $100 off of the $349 price for the event, bringing this awesome conference for $249!  With this fee, you will have access to multiple classroom sessions and many photowalks are included too.  If your members choose to attend a smaller, more intimate photowalk, there may be additional fees.

I'd like to let you know ahead of time too, that anyone who signs up will get a $75 credit towards any of these walks or the water taxi tour on Thursday evening from 4:30-7pm.  We have many exciting additions to the classroom setting like a photowalk with Lindsay Adler to her personal studio, walks to DUMBO, the High Line, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Grand Central, and so many more locations!  I sure hope to see you there and appreciate you passing on the word to anyone interested in photography.

Feel free to pass on my email, malinda@outofchicago.com, to anyone who has questions.  I would love to help them out and share my excitement for the event!

Send them to outofnewyork.com for more information and to register, outofchicago.com to learn more about us and our other upcoming events, and I'd like to invite them to join our Facebook group, https://www.facebook.com/groups/1056113057743097 where they will be part of a great photographic community!

Are you familiar with the Out of Chicago Photography Conference?  They’ve put together the most amazing, inspiring, and fun photography conference for 3 years now downtown Chicago.  It’s gone so well, they’ve decided to expand this amazing event by bringing it to New York City.

As the “Shooting-est Photography Conference on Earth”, not only will you learn in a classroom setting with photographers like Lindsay Adler, Bryan Peterson, Rick Sammon, Valerie Jardin, and MORE, but they’ll also take you on the streets of Manhattan to use what you learn!  One of the many reasons for its success is the smaller, more intimate class size.  You will be in a classroom with no more than 40- 60 people (other than the keynote speakers), and you will be able to interact with your favorite instructors!

Out of New York is set for Friday and Saturday October 14 and 15, 2016.  Included in your fee is 2 full days of classes along with many social photowalks to choose from.  There will also be opportunities for educational, smaller photowalks for an additional charge.  Check out the Sunday, full day on-the-street workshops too! Sign up at www.outofnewyork.com or email malinda@outofchicago.com for more information.

We look forward to seeing you in New York City!!

Calling all artists

Calling all artists: photgoraphers, painters, musicians, etc. Sign up now, PPA needs thousands of signatures, signing up willNOT put you on a random email list, they will not share your inforamtion. Thy  will use it only for this campaign, to ask congress to allow copyright violations to go to skall claims court (currently they are only allowed in Federal court, which means $50,000 min). Please share this with all of your creative friends and colleagues!
Please sign up to be part of this historic grassroots advocacy effort! Photography Copyright, Copyright for Photographers, Photographic Copyright, Copyright
Together, we can create a positive change for copyright owners across America. By signing up, you will receive news on the latest from Capitol Hill
and requests for action when it is the best time to contact your congressmen.
American creators are among our nation's greatest economic contributors. The harsh reality of copyright law in America, however, is that our nation's one-size-fits-all system leaves out most visual artists. The system currently works for low-volume, high-value creators – motion picture creators, recording artists, etc., but it is largely ineffective for small creative businesses like professional photographers.
"A small claims process for copyright enforcement would be the single most important copyright improvement for photographers."
Because most common infringements are valued at a few thousand dollars or less, seeking remedies in Federal Court is not a viable option. Consequently, many creators have copyright protection on paper, but no viable option for enforcing those rights.
A small claims option would correct this decade-long inequity in the law, and would extend protection under the law to hundreds of thousands of small-business creators. Visual artists are entitled to an effective means of enforcing their intellectual property rights. The time has come to correct this injustice.

PPA proposed the creation of a copyright small claims tribunal under the United States Copyright Office, and supports many of the conclusions and recommendation of the Copyright Office's 2013 report on that subject. In order to be effective, this process must be simplified, allowing remote and electronic submissions. There are some constitutional issues at stake, creating the need for this process to be voluntary, but we urge lawmakers to build incentives into small claims legislation to encourage defendants to participate in the process. Check PPA's proposal for copyright small claims here.

The Case for Copyright Small Claims

Small Claims Infographic Copyright Defense
PPA has reached a critical point in our effort to advocate for the creation of a copyright small claims process. It has been ten years since PPA CEO, David Trust, introduced Photography Copyright, Copyright for Photographers, Photographic Copyright, Copyrightthis idea during a congressional hearing. And during the past ten years, PPA has spread the word on Capitol Hill of just how important this issue is for professional photographers!

Recently, we've received news that a piece of legislation creating a copyright small claims process will be introduced in the House of Representatives. And we have been working very closely with the drafters of this bill. This is very exciting news and a huge step toward accomplishing our top legislative goal!  But we still have a very long way to go, and we have reached the point where we need your help! We need 100 percent participation from the professional photographic community to get this legislation passed. Every voice counts! At the right times, PPA will call on you to contact your congressmen.
Keep in mind that a bill must go through a lengthy legislative process before becoming law.  If you need a refresher on the legislative process, check out this favorite from Schoolhouse Rock!  There are some key steps that we will need your help with:
  • Soliciting co-sponsors for the bill
  • Asking your representative to vote yes!
  • Asking your senators to vote yes!
Depending on how this process unfolds, there may be an additional step or two where we ask you to speak up. But don't worry – PPA has created a process to make your role as simple as possible. Be sure to sign up for theGrassroots Action Team (step 3) to receive up-to-date news and notifications. Under step 4, we will connect you directly with the right member(s) of Congress to contact at the right time. We will even provide you with talking points and sample language, so that you can quickly send an email or make a phone call. Though this will be quick and easy, you will be helping to make a historic change which will positively affect the livelihood of professional photographers for generations to come!

This is our chance! Don't miss out on this opportunity! Get involved, and spread the word! It is your job to make sure every professional photographer and other small-business creator (graphic designers, authors, illustrators, etc.) you know is aware of this effort! Please urge all of them to get involved!

Marc Muench Portland all-day seminar Saturday, October 22nd

Marc Muench Portland all-day seminar Saturday, October 22nd

One of America’s top photographers, Marc Muench, is coming to Portland for an all-day seminar on Saturday, October 22nd.  Marc's presentation will educate, enlighten, and motivate. This event is sponsored by the Portland Camera Club and is open to the public.

Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 9AM to 5PM
at the Parker Pavilion on the UNE Portland Campus,
716 Stevens Ave, Portland, Maine

The all-day seminar on Saturday 10/22/16 is for photographers of every level. Marc's teaching is both fun and practical. He will touch on the mechanics of photography, including ways to have fun and be creative with your camera. A veteran landscape photographer, Marc will show how to see the possibilities in a landscape scene. He will discuss how to use your time in the field wisely, and he will teach several different approaches to creating an effective photograph.
Marc's presentation will cover composition and pre-visualization, teaching you how to think about composition using a specific list of simple terms, as well as how to apply those terms to your images and your seeing. You will be amazed at how useful and important it can be to think simply in order to compose, create and craft dramatic landscape images.
The day will also include instruction about image-editing software, Lightroom in particular. At the end of the day, you will have learned much about envisioning and capturing beautiful landscape images in the field, and how to use post-processing software to bring out the best in your digital files.
Marc is an artist who is always learning himself. "I look at other fields like fashion and fine art to derive different ideas and techniques to apply to my landscape photography." That sensibility is evident in his teaching of photography. "Working with passionate amateurs and professionals has expanded my world view. So many wonderfully unique people I have worked with have become an incredible source of inspiration. I never considered that teaching could be so gratifying and inspirational."

Out of New York Conference Friday and Saturday October 14 and 15, 2016

Out of New York Conference Friday and Saturday October 14 and 15, 2016

In honor of Hunt's Photo as one of the sponsors, please use code Gary50 for $50 off the $299 price.  Sign up at www.outofnewyork.com or email malinda@outofchicago.com for more information. Thanks to Chris, Malinda, Michelle and the whole team for your work on this incredible conference. (I'm already signed up for OOC2017 - are you?) Thanks in particular to Angie, Ron, Levi, Bryan, Valerie, Tim,Ken, Steve, Steve, Eugene, Corwin, James, Rick and Scott for your wisdom and encouragement.
