Peter Glass will speak on 'Taking Great Photos with Your Smartphone' on May 7 at the CT Valley Camera Club

Peter Glass will speak on 'Taking Great Photos with Your Smartphone' on May 7 at the CT Valley Camera Club (photo by Peter Glass)

Acclaimed Professional Photographer Peter Glass to Speak on 'Taking Great Photos with Your Smartphone' at CT Valley Camera Club meeting, May 7.

AREAWIDE: The guest speaker at the Monday, May 7 meeting of the Connecticut Valley Camera Club (CVCC) will be the acclaimed professional photographer Peter Glass, who will give a presentation titled, "Taking Great Photos with Your Smartphone."  The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Lymes’ Senior Center, 26 Town Woods Rd., Old Lyme, Conn. All are welcome. There is no admission charge.

The quality of smartphone cameras has improved substantially over recent years and their capabilities now extend far beyond what many people use them for currently. In many situations, they work well as valuable stand-ins for bigger, more cumbersome traditional cameras. It, therefore, is no longer necessary to drag around a big camera for fear of missing that great picture opportunity. A good quality smartphone camera can work almost as well.

In this presentation, Peter Glass will give comprehensive guidance on how to set up and use the camera on your smartphone including which photography apps to install, how to use the camera controls, useful accessories to purchase and helpful smartphone photography techniques.

Peter Glass has been a professional photographer for more than 25 years. He specializes in stock, corporate and editorial photography, with his photos appearing regularly in magazines, advertising brochures, and on book covers. He offers photography classes at local colleges, towns, art associations, libraries, and through his Meetup group, the Connecticut Photography Workshops (www.meetup.com/Connecticut-Photography-Workshops). Peter holds a Master of Arts degree in Film and Television Production from the University of Texas. His current work can be viewed at www.peterglass.com and www.stockpeterglass.com.

About the Connecticut Valley Camera Club (CVCC): The CVCC is dedicated to offering its membership the opportunity to become better photographers. The group offers a variety of presentations and interactive workshops to help members expand their technical and creative skills. Photographers of all levels of experience are welcomed.  The club draws members from up and down the river, from Middletown to Old Saybrook; from East Hampton to Old Lyme; and along the shoreline from Guilford to Gales Ferry. For more information, visit the club’s website at https://ctvalleycameraclub.smugmug.com/. CVCC meeting dates, speakers/topics, and other notices are also published on the club’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/CTValleyCameraClubPage.

Art & Science Photography in the Spotlight this Spring at the Bruce

I wanted to share the attached news release about three upcoming photo-centric exhibitions at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich.

This spring the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT, focuses on photography as it presents three new exhibitions, each using photos to reflect the duality of the Bruce mission, to promote the arts and sciences.

On April 7, the Bruce Museum will open In Time We Shall Know Ourselves: Photographs by Raymond Smith, an exhibition of black-and-white photographs by New Haven artist Raymond Smith. The exhibition will be on display in the Museum’s Bantle Lecture Gallery through June 3, 2018.

On April 14, Wild Bees: Photographs by Paula Sharp and Ross Eatman, opens in the Science Gallery at the Bruce. This exhibition features more than two dozen exquisite photographs of wild bees in their natural habitats. Wild Bees will be on view through November 11, 2018.

On June 2, the Bruce proudly presents the National Geographic Photo Ark, featuring more than 50 compelling images by National Geographic photographer and Fellow Joel Sartore. Photo Ark is an ambitious project committed to documenting every species in captivity. Photo Ark will be on view at the Bruce through September 2, 2018.

I’m hoping you could spread the word about these shows and related programs with readers of the NECCC blog. I’m also happy to say that we’ve arranged a special 15% discount on membership at the Bruce for photography club members. Valid through April 30, this offer not only gives a break on membership but also allows new members to attend our artists’ talks free of charge. The promotional code to use is Photo15, at this link: https://brucemuseum.org/site/join_and_support_detail/membership1

Below is a snapshot of the exhibitions, which I’ve sent to our local media contacts, and here are more details about the upcoming photographers’ talks:

Thanks in advance for sharing this news with your fellow photographers. If you have any questions, by all means give me a call or send along an email.

"Arctic Adventures in Iceland and Greenland"

"Arctic Adventures in Iceland and Greenland"

On Wednesday, May 2, the Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) is pleased to host Eric
Vickery, a Massachusetts-based adventure and travel photographer, who will share his
passion for the outdoors and the environment by presenting a multi-media show on the
incredible beauty of Iceland and Greenland as well as the global importance of these Arctic
regions.

Eric has had the good fortune to join photographers from ten other countries on a winter visit
to the south coast of Iceland to experience ice caves, auroras and glaciers. Photographic
experiences on this trip enabled him to work with and contribute to The Arctic Arts Project
whose mission is to educate, inspire and provide perspective on the kinetic evolution of the
Arctic. The Project's goal is to present a visual body of work that will reveal a unique
perspective of climate change in the Arctic. For more information, visit their website at
http://arcticartsproject.com.

Continuing his association with The Arctic Arts Project, Eric journeyed to Scoresby Sound in
East Greenland recently with another photographic team on the Schooner Donna Wood to
experience the raw existence of the remote landscapes and Inuit settlements. To complement
the considerable experience and talent of this photographic team, Eric provided support for
aerial perspective with drone video and still photography. The scale and beauty of these
regions is truly beyond words and better shared visually.

Vickery, an active member in the Camera Club of Central New England, has presented this
program in his native town of Lunenburg as well as other locations in Central Massachusetts.
Eric's passion for travel and adventure go hand and hand with his love of photography. To
see his work, visit http://vickeryphoto.com.

The presentation is free and open to the general public. AVCC welcomes anyone interested
in learning more about photography as a visual art and its practical application as a science.
Meetings are held at 7:30 PM on the first and third Wednesday of each month from
September through early June in the Great Room at the Hudson Senior Center, 29 Church
Street. For more information check out the AVCC website at assabetvalleycc.com or
contact John Gill, club President, at 978-293-5192.
