Renowned Professional Photographer to Speak on Black and White Photography Techniques at CT Valley Camera Club Meeting, August 6.

Renowned Professional Photographer to Speak on Black and White Photography Techniques at CT Valley Camera Club Meeting, August 6.

AREAWIDE: The guest speaker at the Monday, August 6 meeting of the Connecticut Valley Camera Club (CVCC) will be the renowned professional photographer Michael Rice, who will give a talk titled, “In the Shadow of the Masters - Black and White Photography.” The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Lymes’ Senior Center, 26 Town Woods Rd., Old Lyme, Conn. All are welcome. There is no admission charge.

Black and white photography stirs our emotions and poses questions in our minds. The interplay of what is revealed in the light and what is hidden in the dark spins the story. Sometimes what is concealed in the shadows is more important than what is in plain sight. How the photographer creates dramatic black and white images allows those that view them to use their imagination to complete the story.

In his inspirational talk, Rice will elaborate on these concepts, sharing ideas and techniques, illustrated by examples from his own work.  His talk will provide guidance on how the photographer can learn to think in black and white, making best use of available light and shadow, and will also provide practical tips on camera settings and post-processing techniques.

Rice is a fine art landscape artist with a passion for black and white photography reminiscent of the old large-format masters. Dramatic light, a smooth tonal range, and textural image details evoking the atmosphere of times past characterize his work. His color work is lush and vibrant, manipulating colors more like an oil painter. Light is playfully manipulated to create drama and intrigue.

He honed his craft through the years working as a commercial, portrait, and wedding photographer, photo-retoucher, and printmaker. His philosophy is that most photographers are either camera-oriented or computer-oriented, meaning that while some photographers excel at taking pictures, others excel at enhancing images in the computer. He believes that to take photography to the next level, today’s successful photographer must be proficient in both disciplines. His premise is that knowing what is possible in the digital darkroom aids the photographer in the decision-making process in the field.

Rice’s work can be viewed on his website at www.twistedtreephoto.com.

About the Connecticut Valley Camera Club (CVCC): The CVCC is dedicated to offering its membership the opportunity to become better photographers. The group offers a variety of presentations and interactive workshops to help members expand their technical and creative skills. Photographers of all levels of experience are welcomed.  The club draws members from up and down the river, from Middletown to Old Saybrook; from East Hampton to Old Lyme; and along the shoreline from Guilford to Gales Ferry. For more information, visit the club’s website at https://ctvalleycameraclub.smugmug.com. CVCC meeting dates, speakers/topics, and other notices are also published on the club’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CTValleyCameraClubPage.

Join Hunt’s Photo Education and Sigma for an action-packed photography workshop!

Join Hunt’s Photo Education for an action-packed photography workshop! On this walk, we will be giving instruction and photographing the fast-paced sport of Polo at the Myopia Polo Grounds in South Hamilton!
We will begin at our classroom at Hunt’s Photo & Video in Melrose, Massachusetts where we will show images from previous years of photography at Myopia and discuss different techniques of photographing action, including how to compose and expose, choose your focus properly, and stop and pan action. After this, we will break for lunch (not included) and regroup at the Myopia Polo Grounds in South Hamilton (about a 35-minute drive from our store). Leading up to the match on the grounds, we will prep by going over the layout of the field and the day, and also photograph some of the lifestyle of the event, including the prominent and often posh tailgating! The match will last from about 3pm until about 5:30pm, with a traditional “fox hunt” as an intermission. (Don’t worry- no foxes will be harmed!) The action, detail, and energy is fantastic!
For this workshop, we will have both classroom AND hands-on instruction from Hunt’s Instructors.

The July 29th date will be a unique event where you will have gear available for you to try out! Sigma’s famed long telephoto lenses (150-600mm, 50-500mm, 70-200mm and more!) will be available to borrow for the afternoon, as well as Manfrotto monopods. Sigma professional Marc Farb will also be on hand for this event to assist.
This workshop is also a part of our Hunt’s Photo Education Weekend of Workshops with Sigma, in which you can sign up for just this event or the entire weekend for a discounted rate.  http://edu.huntsphoto.com/calendar/hunts-photo-educations-weekend-of-workshops-with-sigma
Hunt’s Photo Education is once again teaming up with Sigma to produce a trio of walks and workshops geared to get you excited about a variety of different photographic styles. The entire weekend will be hosted by Hunt’s Photo Education staff and Sigma professional Marc Farb with lenses unique to each event. This will be a fun event!

On Friday, we will take a walk through MIT in Cambridge to photograph some of the most unique architecture in Massachusetts, then onto Memorial Drive overlooking the Charles. We continue on Saturday with another installment in our Portrait Series that will emphasize creating portraits using only natural light. We conclude Sunday as we capture the action at the Myopia Polo grounds in South Hamilton.

The 73rd Annual Photography NECCC Conference has an APP !!!

The 73rd Annual Photography NECCC Conference has an APP !!! http://tinyurl.com/NECCC2018

I recently presented a program at Stonybrook Camera Club. They are a very enthusiastic group of people and during dinner, before the program, they had a bunch of suggestions for the NECCC photography conference. Not all of their suggestions could be implemented for the 73rd annual conference, but I did manage to run with one of their ideas -- an app.

You can download this app to have the campus maps, schedule, photo ops, female and character models, social media contest etc. at your disposal. We would suggest doing this at home so you can be sure of wifi access; once downloaded you can use the app without internet.

As everyone has different levels of experience here are some basic instructions
  1. Click on the link http://tinyurl.com/NECCC2018
  2. Press your homepage once and click "add to home screen" (see screenshot below)
    1. Note that if you have a lot of apps then this NECCC app will be placed in the next open slot, which could mean that you have to scroll to the right...
  3. You can click on any of the images and make them larger and zoom/scroll
  4. At the bottom of the app, there is an online gallery where you can also save these as JPGs directly to your smartphone, iPAD, etc.
Screenshot, click that little rectangle with the arrow, then click add to home screen. Note that if you have a lot of apps then this NECCC app will be placed in the next open slot, which could mean that you have to scroll to the right...

From the gallery at the bottom you can click on the images online (these are larger versions) and you can download them to your iPad, smartphone, etc. by clicking on the down arrow and selecting save image (you can also share them on social media)

With seven retail locations in four New England states, Hunt’s offers an unbeatable combination of competitive pricing, sales know-how, and unparalleled customer service.

A little history…

Three generations of Farber family ownership have established Hunt’s as a trendsetter in the imaging equipment industry. Begun as a Malden Center drugstore by pharmacist Solomon Farber and his sons, Hunt’s began building its camera business during the 1950s under the visionary leadership of Solomon’s son, Jack. As interest in photography grew and small neighborhood pharmacies fell victim to big national chains, Hunt’s began shifting its emphasis away from the pharmacy business and into the business of cameras and accessories. By 1992, the pharmacy closed and imaging equipment became Hunt’s primary focus.

Led today by Jack’s sons, Scott and Gary, Hunt’s proudly serves a diverse audience of individual, corporate, educational, and government clients as one of the country’s largest retailers of photographic, video and digital imaging products. As the sponsor of the renowned Hunt’s Show and Sale each fall, the company hosts a three-day showcase of the latest trends in photographic equipment for users at all levels. Visit Hunt’s 30,000 square foot flagship store at 100 Main Street, Melrose, or one of its satellite locations in Boston, MA – Cambridge, MA – Hanover, MA – Holyoke, MA – Providence, RI – So. Portland, ME – or Manchester, NH to discover how Hunt’s Photo, Video and definitely Digital can help you create your own picture of success.

Exploring Vietnam

A One-of-A-Kind Photo Adventure from Lush Landscapes to Rich Cultural Settings
with
Dan Burkholder
March 26 - April 9, 2019, Limited to 12 participants

Whether you are mesmerized by its stunning natural beauty or fascinated by the turbulent touch of war, Vietnam offers a unique blend of visual intrigue. This is a country pulled in different directions by a French colonial history and crossed by trading routes from China and Japan. Every region reveals hints of colorful culture and dramatic visual diversity. In this inspirational and hands-on workshop, we will enjoy 15 days and 14 nights exploring three regions of Vietnam, from the bustling Hanoi in the north to the imperial temples and agricultural richness of Hue to the Old World elegance of Hoi An and Danang.

The price of the workshop includes two flights within the country to insure that your time is well spent while you move between different areas of Vietnam. Your adventure will include an overnight boat cruise in the legendary Ha Long Bay and transportation by roomy, air conditioned private vehicle while traveling throughout the countryside.

Every day and evening will be filled with photographic opportunities and all types of photography are embraced: DSLR, iPhone, mirrorless cameras are all welcome. Dan Burkholder, master photographer, artist and photographic innovator, promotes a lightweight approach to image making where you can shoot with any digital camera that allows you to transfer images to iPhones and iPads. You’ll discover the joy of editing on your iPhone during lunch or on your iPad in the middle of the night — a dream for the travel photographer!

Joining Dan will be award-winning professional photographer and tour operator, Sarah McGarghan, whose expertise will keep the expedition flowing smoothly by coordinating all aspects of the trip, assisting with all the photographic needs and ensuring that the trip is free from hassles and full of good memories. Dan and Sarah will be at your side providing photographic know-how, experience and a light-hearted approach to sharing friendship and making memories during this photographic adventure.

The 73rd Annual Photography NECCC Conference has an APP

Android

Android
  1. Copy the StickyFolio URL and paste into the Chromebrowser.
  2. Click Chrome's built-in menu (usually three lines in the upper right) OR the phone’s built in menu option (Samsung phones). This is usually three lines on the device to the left of the home button.
  3. Select “Add to Home Screen.”
