Here are descriptions of the Nature programs. 

Mary Lindhjem and Mollie Isaacs (VA) M & M's (Mary & Mollie's) Mighty Macro

Macro photography opens new visual doors, and allows you to view the world in a very different way. But it is all too easy to get caught up in the mechanics and techniques of the process, and lose sight of the creative and artistic possibilities that attracted you to macro in the first place. This fast-paced and exciting program will help you find or rediscover your passion, and will provide unique, easy approaches to creating truly artistic macro images. The M&M Twins will weave their humor and experience into an entertaining presentation designed to instruct as well as to delight, and will reveal their secrets for finding and creating beautiful macro images. So leave your pre-conceived notions at home, and come with an open mind. You will leave fired up and well-prepared to elevate your photography to a higher level. (B, I, A)

Roman Kurywczak (NJ) Photographing Wildlife – from Animals to Birds

This exciting educational program will cover everything you will need to know about photographing wildlife in the field. The photographic journey will cover exotic locations such as Tanzania but also include many tips for photographing wildlife closer to home in some unexpected places.  Minimum gear requirements will be discussed for both the safety of the wildlife and the photographer.  Camera settings will be covered for wildlife portrait work as well as action photography and the impact those settings will have on your images.  The program concludes with an in depth segment on photographing birds in flight. Jerry Monkman  (NH) Light and the Winter Landscape

This lecture discusses the nuances of winter light and how to make great photos in the snow and ice. Jerry also explains how to keep your gear (and you!) safe in winter conditions. (B, I)

Cynthia Perdigao (MA) Macro Flower Photography:  Seeing Inspiration and Creating Intent in Your Photography 

When viewing a scene a series of events come together, and within that series of events are judgments, opinions, and frames of reference that determine how the image will resonate with the viewer.  Most of all, there is an emotion that is felt; this is the true photographic conversation between the photographer and viewer.  Setting an intention for your image BEFORE you press the shutter is the most effective way to guide the viewer to that emotional response. The goal of this “intentional photography” is to convey an emotion and not just to capture a nicely exposed flower or macro scene, but rather to cause the viewer to be drawn in and actually feel the story and emotion which the photographer is attempting to convey.

Photographers will learn how to be intentional in their photography and how to resonate with the viewer; not simply press the shutter again and again and pick the “best shot”.  By learning to “see” the essence of a scene (the thing that drew them to photograph it) before pressing the shutter, photographers will create a better image. Cinde will show inexpensive set ups that attendees can use at home for flower and other types of macro photography. She will also demonstrate how, as a disabled photographer, she has learned simple setups which she uses in her “kitchen studio” that allows her to create emotional images; setups and methods which will lend themselves to any photographer working in their own home studio.   She will show examples of how she finds the “stories” of her subjects and will demonstrate how to go beyond just properly composing and exposing a flower. Cinde will also discuss how to take these skills and apply them in the field and to larger scenes, going beyond conventional photographic rules and encompassing true intent. In addition, the use of textures or textured backgrounds can create a mood which leads the viewer of an image to connect with the story within the image.  (Sponsored by Nikon) (B, I, A)

WORKSHOP IV   --  Advanced Program:   Potent Tool: Photoshop Blend Modes

Layers and layer masks in Photoshop do heavy lifting and the blend modes provide much of the power for that. This hands-on workshop will explore what these blend modes are, the mechanics of blending, and how to use different modes for different purposes in Photoshop. You will learn efficient ways of adjusting tonality, color, contrast, and other image attributes as well as augmenting them with layer masks. Photoshop CS6 will used but earlier versions are similar. PREREQUISITE: You must bring laptop with a copy of Photoshop installed and be comfortable using Photoshop, working knowledge of layers.

WORKSHOP III  --  Intermediate Program:   Elements - Layers & Beyond

This intermediate/advanced class will explore the more advanced functions of layers; how they can help your workflow and how you can change the effect of a layer by utilizing blending modes and opacity levels. We will work together on provided images and use filters, textures, shapes, and type to jazz up these images.  You will learn masking and how it can simplify many processes. Images will be provided so we can work together, as well as class notes for reference and practice at home.  PREREQUISITE: You must bring a laptop with a copy of Elements 9 or newer installed, and you must be experienced with basic adjustment layers in Elements.

WORKSHOP II  --  Setting Up and Using a Low Cost Home Studio

This program focuses on setting up a small home studio, and will cover setups for portrait photography, product photography and macro photography.  You will learn how to make and use backgrounds, softboxes, diffusers and reflectors, and to create phenomenal lighting effects with on and off camera hot-shoe flashes, workman’s lamps and a number of do-it-yourself designs.  We will have a live model and will use the simple setups to demonstrate the power of small lights and inexpensive lighting accessories.

You will work on images supplied by them on your own laptop, and will come away with the skills necessary to use Lightroom successfully.  In this session we will concentrate on the Development Module and explore the powerful tools available here to realize your creative vision.  Join them for this instructive, easy to understand workshop, and learn how to transform your images into the natural-looking works of art that will take your breath away. PREREQUISITE: Attendees must bring a laptop preloaded with Adobe Lightroom 4. You should have basic computer skills and basic familiarity with Lightroom.

PORTFOLIO REVIEW (40 minute individual sessions at NECCC)

PORTFOLIO REVIEW (40 minute individual sessions)

This is your opportunity to have up to 15 images (prints and/or digital) reviewed by one of New England’s top photographers/judges. Reviewers include William Barnett MPSA, MNEC, AFIAP; Jacob Mosser, FPSA, MPSA, HonNEC, and Sarah Musumeci, MNEC.  The cost is $40 per 40 minute session. In this session, the participant can discuss their work on an individual basis. If you sign up for this service, a confirmation form will be sent to you by June 25^th.  On this form, you will indicate your first and second choice of reviewer and indicate whether you will bring prints, digital images or both.  You must return the form by July 2^nd.  You will then be contacted via e-mail with the time slot and room number of the reviewer to whom you have been assigned.  All efforts will be made to accommodate your first choice.  Please note this activity takes place at the same time as the other five pre-conference seminars. If paying by check write a separate check for the portfolio review.

Join Tom and Lisa Cuchara for special after hours access to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery! (Just over an hours drive from Hamden, CT). The cemetery usually closes at 4:30pm but we will be there after dark. Meet at the gate by 7:30pm and shoot until 1:30am! Learn  how to control the ambient light with your long exposures and the local light with your flashlight. They will spend the first part of the session going over camera settings and tips for long exposures, light painting etc.

WORKSHOP V  --   Hands-on Program: Taking Your Macro Photography to the Next Level

Roman will show you how to get the most out of your macro photography and achieve consistently good results. A heavy emphasis will be placed on using flash correctly in the field to properly balance the exposure and achieve dramatic results.  High key macro photography, cross polarization, and other creative macro techniques will also be explored. Bring your camera, macro lens, and flash if you have one.  Knowledge of how to change your camera settings is required to participate; bring your camera manual.  Sigma will provide a selection of loaner macro lenses for you to try out during this hands-on workshop.
