Old, Historic, Grand, Dramatic, Unique -- these characteristics draw us to explore and capture the essence of these rusty, dusty subjects and locations. Urban exploration (UrbEx) is the art of finding and exploring abandoned locations. Not all locations are technically "urban" or even "abandoned". The term abandoned is used VERY loosely. It is not "being abandoned" that attracts us to a place, it is the history, beauty, decay, charm, and architectural details (which contrast so drastically with today’s vanilla architecture). Another definition of UrbEx is the investigation of seldom seen man-made structures, a definition more consistent with our quest, since our subjects may be FAR from abandoned (like the architectural grandeur of bustling Grand Central Terminal or the surprising drama of the [empty] neo-Gothic Eastern State Penitentiary), but these sites count as "unseen" because few people actually stop to appreciate beautiful prison architecture or the jaw-dropping details of Grand Central, a place that they might even rush through twice a day.  

In this book, we discuss a variety of UrbEx images, using them as examples to share a variety of capture and processing tips with you. All of the photographs taken in this book were taken on a tripod and most involved high dynamic range (HDR) capture; the few images herein that are not HDR are long exposures instead, and almost all of those are light painted. Winter 2017 competition results posted

The Winter 2017 competition, hosted by The Greater Lynn Photographic Association, was held on
Monday, February 27, 2017 at the club’s headquarters, located at 564 Boston St., Lynn, MA. The
competition was directed by Marilyn and Rick Cloran with assistance provided by Dana Patch. Fortythree clubs participated in the Pictorial section (21 from Class A and 22 from Class B) and Forty-one clubs participated in the Nature section (17 from Class A and 24 from Class B). Thanks are extended to The Greater Lynn Photographic Association for hosting this second competition of the 2016-17 season. See full report and Galleries here.

technology, she will reference tools and apps for other Smartphones where applicable.

The ever improving camera capabilities in today’s Smartphones, coupled with the fact that we typically carry them with us at all times, lends them to be an amazing tool to capture your world in a new creative way. While our speakers large SLR is still her go to for photography, she travels for a living and often cannot take a lot of equipment with her on trips. Thus, she has learned to love her iPhone and the fun that comes with it. Using a combination of lenses and apps, she will teach you a new way to creatively capture your surroundings. During this 3-hour workshop, we will review some fun tools (lenses, tripods, etc.) that can enhance the use of your Smartphone and explore fun shooting and editing apps that will give your creative juices a boost and help you bring out your inner painter or abstract artist. After our review of Smartphone apps and technology, we will have time to explore and test our new knowledge. During this time, you can download new apps and I will be available to help with any questions you might have.
