CHARLES W. MORGAN DAY

FREE ADMISSION FOR ALL VISITORS!

Join us as we celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the arrival of the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan to Mystic Seaport by offering free admission to all Museum visitors on November 9, 2013.The anniversary recognizes the importance the Charles W. Morgan has had in the development of Mystic Seaport and the community since she was towed up the river on November 8, 1941.

The Morgan is the last wooden whaleship from the Age of Sail and is the oldest American commercial vessel still afloat. After an 80-year whaling career, the ship was at risk of being broken up when she was offered to the infant Marine Historical Association (now Mystic Seaport). The acquisition of the ship raised the stature of the Museum significantly and helped put Mystic on the map of tourist destinations. More than 20 million people have come to Mystic and walked her decks since 1941.

Launched this past July after being out of the water for nearly five years, the Morgan is now undergoing the final phase of her restoration. This includes rigging, restoring the whaleship’s interior, and installing temporary systems necessary to take her back to sea for a ceremonial 38th Voyage in late May 2014.

Visitors are invited to climb aboard this National Historic Landmark vessel and get an up-close look at a piece of American history. Special shipwright talks and tours of the Morgan will add to the day’s festivities
