About the castle:
After the Spanish-American War, arms merchant Francis Bannerman bought 90 percent of the U.S. Army's decommissioned weapons. Bannerman then constructed an arsenal on an island in the Hudson River. Built in the style of a Scottish castle, the arsenal featured a gateway once outfitted with a drawbridge. Long neglected and devastated by fire in 1969, the castle is now the focus of local preservation efforts.

David H Wells  presents "Making Exceptional Travel Photographs"

David H Wells (RI) Making Exceptional Travel Photographs

Making exceptional travel photographs requires a photographer to be good at a wide variety of photographic genres, varying from street photography, to still life work to portraits. The best travel photographers are on a life-long journey combining two of their favorite passions: travel and photography. Similarly, they are versatile in their skills and fluid in their process, using minimal gear to achieve maximum of results. An inveterate traveler, David Wells has distilled his working technique and gear down to a bare minimum. The presentation will explore his working strategy and his gear, to help attendees achieve the maximum in image quality while using the minimal gear. Topics covered will include being in the right place at the right time, understanding how the time of the day affects the quality and direction of light, the importance of varying shots, position and angle, portraying people, visualizing spaces, stopping action vs. showing motion, thoughts on tripods, the magic of twilight, the appropriate lenses, some basics of flash, the power of silhouettes, the importance of working your situations, and putting it all together to get “the moment.” (Sponsored by Olympus) (B, I, A)

"Waterfalls and Wine Country"
October 17-20, 2013
Ithaca, NY
Waterfalls and winemaking are what make New York's Finger Lakes region famous. Add in Autumn: pastoral, tranquil, and clothed in blazing color. What a fantastic combination for a workshop! Some of the most scenic waterfalls in the country reside here. There are over two hundred in the region, including Taughannock Falls, the highest in New York State. Each fall has its own character; some drop like bridal veils, others sluice over ledges, and some, like those in renowned Watkins Glen, carve dramatic chasms. Most of our photo time will be spent taking advantage of opportunities provided by the waterfalls near Ithaca and Watkins Glen. In addition, we will mix in a visit to a local winery or two, to break up our day and give us additional photo possibilities.

Deborah Sandidge presents "Long Exposure Creativity" at NECCC

Deborah Sandidge presents "Long Exposure Creativity" at NECCC
Deborah Sandidge (FL) Long Exposure Creativity
One of the fascinating aspects of photography is the ability to convey the passage of time, or to create a sense of motion through the art and technique of long exposure.  You can create beautiful long exposure images at the edge of night and beyond, and capture surreal photos during the brightness of day. By the use of neutral density filters, you can calm the crashing waves of an ocean, softly blur clouds across the sky, and create the impression of emptiness on busy walkways and streets.  This changes everything, the reality, the mood, and the drama of a composition, allowing you to create expressive, fine art imagery.  Join professional photographer and author Deborah Sandidge as she guides you through creative techniques for photographing and enhancing long exposure imagery. Deborah teaches several online courses at BetterPhoto.com, along with photography workshops and presents seminars throughout the year. (Sponsored by Nikon) (I, A)

PRINTING

A. Cemal Ekin, PhD (RI) Outputting from Photoshop and Lightroom
Sooner or later every photographer needs to create printed output of her or his work. Whether on an inkjet printer, printed at a photo lab, or even photo books and magazines, this process needs to be very carefully controlled if consistent quality is desired; and who would not want that? This presentation will focus on the general workflow to directly output to a printer, prepare images for lab printing, or creating magazine format publications. Given the time limitations, the emphasis will be on the disciplined workflow that the participants need to put to use in their own time, on their own equipment. Actual output examples will be provided and the process used to create them will be explained. (B, I)

PHOTO TRAVEL

John Fuller, FPSA, HonNEC, AFIAP (MA) In Search of Emperors
The Emperor Penguin is perhaps the most remote and difficult bird to reach in the world. Join John Fuller the Kapitan Khlebnikov, the famed Russian icebreaker, sails from the Falkland Islands to South Georgia Island and on to the rarely visited South Sandwich Islands. From there we cross the mostly frozen Weddell Sea to reach the Antarctic coast frozen in “fast ice” to visit colonies of Emperor Penguins. Although the Emperors are the focus, many other penguin species are encountered on this Antarctic adventure including King, Adelie, Gentoo and Chinstrap. John’s photography will bring them all to you in this “once in a lifetime” trip.

PORTRAITURE

Rick Friedman (MA) Location Lighting with Rick Friedman
As photographers, we are challenged to create a beautiful and compelling image every day for a client or ourselves. In his lecture, Rick discusses his portable location lighting techniques that enable him to capture his award winning imagery.
The lecture explores ways to create interesting lighting on location and in the studio.  Rick will share his stories of photographing and lighting some of his past subjects including Anthony Hopkins, and President Obama.  As a magazine photojournalist, his lighting is elaborate, yet practical.  The lecture includes live demonstration how Rick would use Dynalites on locations and in studio, which has been his “go-to studio strobe” throughout his career.  (Sponsored by Dynalite) (B, I)

Christina Richardson (RI) The Art of Photographing Children from 7 Days to 7 Years
With the help of her seven year old daughter and many other fast moving targets, Christina Beth has learned how to capture both candid and posed images of children. Eight years ago she started gaining experience photographing young children for friends, leading to a career as a professional photographer specializing in maternity, newborn, and child portraiture. She has also learned that different age groups require different social interaction and photography techniques.  Christina will share tips and techniques on lighting, camera settings, composition, prop selection, and gaining cooperation of children between the ages of seven days and seven years old.
