PW1 Erin Babnik (Canon)
Erin Babnik (CA) is known internationally as a leading photographic artist, educator, author, and speaker. Her expressive style of landscape photography is an unusual integration of adventurous exploration, progressive techniques, and classical education in the arts. In her writing and public speaking, Erin explores topics with a unique blend of art historical, philosophical, and instructional ideas, an approach that has made her one of the most notable voices among the current generation of landscape photographers.    Erin’s dedication to the medium of photography evolved out of her years working as an art historian, photographing at archaeological sites and in museums for the purposes of teaching and research. Previously, she had experimented with photography creatively in art school, working with both film and early digital cameras to explore the potential for photography to communicate ideas in graphic design projects. Full immersion in the art of photography would come some years later, however. After transferring to a Ph.D. program in Art History, she began to produce photographs for her dissertation and for teaching undergraduate courses. It was at this point that her interest in photography became an obsession. Her goal of producing a high-quality archive of photographs for educational purposes ultimately led to the pursuit of compelling images as ends in themselves.    Erin spent the last six years of her academic career moonlighting as an assignment photographer and slowly transitioning to her current focus on wilderness photography, ultimately developing that passion into a full-time profession. She currently splits her time between offices on two continents and teaches photography workshops worldwide. Erin is honored to be a Canon Explorer of Light and is also a member of the illustrious nature photography team Photo Cascadia.

PW2 Charles Needle (Mobile Device)
Charles Needle (CO) is an award-winning, Colorado-based fine art photographer, author, speaker and workshop leader with a unique eye for design and artistic interpretation.  His popular “Art of Nature” creative macro workshops have attracted students nationwide. In 2011, Charles was selected as a finalist, among 15,000 entries worldwide, in the International Garden Photographer of the Year photography contest, sponsored by The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (London, England).  This exhibition traveled throughout the United Kingdom.  He was also a semi-finalist in the 2014 Nature's Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Awards photo contest.    A popular New England Camera Club Council speaker for several years, Charles has authored three cutting-edge instructional books: Tiny Worlds: Creative Macro Photography Skills (Amherst Media, January 2015), Impressionistic Photography: A Field Guide to Using Your Camera as a Paintbrush (March 2014), and Creative Macro Photography: Professional Tips & Techniques (2011). An accomplished speaker, photography juror and teacher with international workshops in Monet's Garden (Giverny, France for 24 years in a row, with exclusive private access), Keukenhof Gardens (Holland) and The Butchart Gardens (Canada), Charles is a FujiFilm USA Talent Team member and North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) Showcase Award winner eight years in a row. Charles’ photographs have selected for publication in Nature’s Best, Outdoor Photographer magazine, Nature Photographer magazine, Inner Reflections Engagement Calendar, The Chicago Tribune, SELF Magazine and are in private and public collections nationwide and abroad. To learn more about Charles' work, including his workshop and private lesson offerings, visit www.charlesneedlephoto.com.

PW3 Xiomaro (Mobile Device)
Xiomaro (NY) (SEE-oh-MAH-ro) is a nationally exhibited artist and curator from New York specializing in photographing National Park sites to raise awareness of their history, culture, and natural beauty.    His work is widely exhibited. At one point, 130 of Xio's photographs could be seen at eight simultaneous exhibitions from Boston to Philadelphia including Harvard University and the Long Island Museum.    Xio is the author of the book “Weir Farm National Historic Site,” which features his photographs of Connecticut's first national park, which was commemorated in this year’s U.S. quarter. The foreword was written by Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and the book was released by Arcadia Publishing. Since 2011, Xio has served as the Visiting Artist at Weir Farm where he began as an Artist-in-Residence.    As a speaker and teacher, Xio has reached thousands of artists, historians, educators, and environmentalists. He was a speaker at the Appalachian Mountain Club's 140th Annual Summit and he has presented talks, lectures, and panel discussions at museums, galleries, conferences, universities, camera/photography clubs, and high schools.    Waiting lists are not unusual for admission to his smartphone photography workshops. His educational programs are supported by the professional photography industry such as Xenvo Pro, Red River Paper, and LensPen. He extends his educational outreach through his Facebook group “Photography with Xiomaro”, which includes members from as far away as England and Myanmar.    Xio’s work has been covered by The New York Times, The Boston Globe, CBS Eyewitness News, The Candid Frame, News 12, Newsday, The Huffington Post, and Fine Art Connoisseur.    His single-minded drive for the arts and the parks is evident in “Unseen Beauty: Photographs by Xiomáro along the New England Trail,” a documentary film produced by the National Park Service, the Appalachian Mountain Club, and the Connecticut Forest and Park Association.    Xio’s photography career is rooted in his prior career as entertainment attorney and musician.  He worked with a wide variety of pop artists from Village People to Gangsta rappers and observed top photographers at work such as Ellen von Unwerth, known for her Guess? Jeans advertising campaign with models Claudia Schiffer and Anna Nicole Smith.  After recovering from cancer, he found peace in the solitude of wandering the parks with his camera, which sparked his current career and artistic path.

PW4 Clifford Pickett (Mobile Device)
Clifford Pickett (NY) is an NYC-based professional travel, humanitarian and commercial photographer, videographer and educator. He is also an FAA Certified Drone Pilot and Adobe Lightroom expert. He’s not your average professional photographer and educator. He failed his first photography class. He waited until digital photography was good enough to avoid film. He’s self taught, sourcing his education through modern methods rather than traditional ones. His approach to his work and his teaching is, as a result, both refreshing and rather unconventional, questioning everything about the standards and norms of creating images. He has learned to successfully operate at the edge of what is possible, leveraging the new capabilities of modern technology and developing techniques that allow him to overcome traditional photographic limitations while simplifying the process.      Recently his focus has shifted more into the education space, teaching at various institutions on the power of mobile photography and demonstrating his distinctly simple yet powerful workflow and editing techniques using Lightroom and the importance of craft and vision over gear.   His unique ability to take a complicated subject matter and distill it into its purest, most simple form, has led to a “more is less” approach to photography, workflow and editing.  More often than not you’ll find him shooting with an iPhone and a small aerial drone.     Professionally, he’s developed several successful photographic enterprises, including an elite personal brand in digital photography, a commercial video production company, a 3D VR imaging business and a community-based platform for local artists in NYC to share their vision and work worldwide.  He’s a chairperson on the board of ASMP, is an adjunct professor at NYU, and a personal consultant for many of the biggest names inside and outside of the photographic industry. His work has caught the attention of many global brands such as Apple, Google, British Airways, Adidas, Estée Lauder, Sephora, Clinique and Lindblad Expeditions, among others, and his work has been featured by National Geographic, the Smithsonian, and various other publications and media outlets.

PW5 William Innes (Panasonic/Lumix)
William Innes (CA) became fascinated with photography at an early age, thanks to his father. It wasn’t his father’s skill, though, that inspired him.    “My dad was not a very good photographer.” “We always joked how people in his photos would have plants or trees growing out of their heads.”    “It was the camera that got me hooked,” William said. “I am definitely right brain/left brain. I loved all the controls on the camera and the way it felt in my hands. A manufacturing career called after college, however. Eventually, William found himself traveling the globe as president of an aerospace company that specialized in aircraft engine components. During a business stopover in Washington, D.C., William strolled through a camera shop and left with new equipment and a rekindled love for photography. His passion for photography had been reignited and one event helped precipitate his career change. His nephew from Canada called and asked if he would photograph his wedding? William quickly read a book on wedding photography, traveled to Canada, photographed the wedding, had a blast and was hooked! Less than six months later, he was a full time wedding photographer.”  “To be a good wedding photographer, you need to be well versed in all kinds of photography — portrait, landscape, action, product. You also need to work well under pressure,” says the self-proclaimed action junkie. His philosophy for wedding photographers: “Yes, we have to capture certain images at all weddings, but spend the rest of the time creating art.” William works and lives in Santa Clarita, CA with his wife. His favorite wedding venue in Southern California is the one he’s about to shoot. If you’d like to contact William about your photography needs, contact him via email at william@innesphotography.com or by phone at 323.639.3686.

PW6 Joe/Mary Ann McDonald (Olympus)
Joe and Mary Ann McDonald (PA) are the most successful and well-known husband/wife wildlife photography team in the US. For over 35 years they have been traveling the world, leading photo tours and safaris, and conducting photography workshops. In a typical year they photograph in at least four continents, covering parts of South America, Africa, North America, and either Europe or Asia.   Both Joe and Mary Ann specialize in capturing action, behavior, or, most challenging, the essence of a subject, revealing the personality of the subjects they love. They have photographed all seven of the world’s big cats, lion, tiger, jaguar, puma, leopard, cheetah, and snow leopard, four different times in a single year – probably a world record. To date they have completed 106 treks to Rwanda’s Mountain Gorillas, the world record for any nature photographer. Joe’s latest book, Gorillas in the Wild, presents Joe and Mary’s extensive coverage of this endangered species, with images never captured before  Joe has written 12 books on wildlife or wildlife photography, and several eBooks, including the definitive book on using high speed flash and triggering devices for capturing behavior and action rarely captured. Mary Ann has written 29 children’s books on various natural history subjects, ranging from grasshoppers to the planet Jupiter. Joe and Mary Ann are feature columnists for Nature Photographer magazine, and Joe is a frequent contributor to the Outdoor Writers of America organization and to Texas Photographer.  Between the two, they have placed in the prestigious BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition 15 times, with several 1st and 2nd places in a contest that often has over 30,000 entries from around the world. In 2021, they will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from NANPA, the North American Nature Photography Association. Joe and Mary Ann have presented one day and weekend long seminars on nature and wildlife photography throughout the United States, as well as in Singapore and Scotland. Joe has presented programs at NECCC on several previous occasions.  Both are Olympus Educators.

PW7 Lou & Todd Nettelhorst
Lou Nettelhorst (IL)– Photography Educator, Award-Winning Photographer  Lou Nettelhorst is first and foremost a photography teacher. His mission is to help photographers discover and explore the artist within. He’s an award winner and stunning image-maker. Lou is a man with a purpose – a purpose to make photographing fun, creative and rewarding for others through his unique teaching style.     The hallmark of Lou’s style is his eagerness to share his professional experience and techniques, while always providing encouragement, constructive feedback, and (often groan-inducing) humor! Lou has taught thousands of aspiring photographers. He literally gets “goosebumps” when he sees the amazing images made by his students and counts their successes as his most treasured reward. One of his students recently commented, “You can be a great photographer, but not know how to teach. Lou is a phenomenal teacher and an amazing photographer!”     Lou shares his talents through local and national workshops, outings, presentations, and private instruction. A natural and experienced teacher, he employs his signature Teaching Model: Inform. Practice. Feedback. to help his students improve their images. Inform: It all begins with personalized instruction designed for photographers of all levels and photography styles. Practice: Students put their lessons to use in a live-shooting environment. Lou provides as much or as little one-on-one coaching and assistance as the student desires.    Feedback: The most highly valued component of the Teaching Model which may be in the field, or in a feedback session as part of a workshop or clinic. Students share their images and receive encouraging, gentle tips for improvement, along with a bit of Lou’s wit!      Background, Education, Awards: Lou’s life work and passion has always been teaching. He has also had a life-long interest in photography which ultimately became his second career.    Beginning as a high school biology teacher in 1966, he progressed through several leadership positions at the school district. Soon, he was asked to serve on the Cooperative Teacher Education Program (CTEP) planning committee with the University of Illinois. He was selected to be their first Science-area coordinator and became an adjunct professor at the university where he taught beginning teachers how to teach. In 1984, after a succession of roles in school administration, he left the district to assume the role of Executive Director for an educational service center whose primary purpose was to train teachers and administrators.    Lou was a student of noted photographers Freeman Patterson, Sam Abel and Bob Sisson. His images were published in Nature’s Best Photography, Outdoor Photographer, North American Nature Photography Association’s (NANPA) Member Showcase and Chicago Wilderness Magazine, as well as many newsletters. In 2010, he received the Kohout Outstanding Nature Photographer’s Award from the Chicago Area Camera Clubs Association (CACCA). In 2019, Lou received the prestigious NANPA Fellow award for his significant contributions to the nature photography profession.    In 2016, Lou partnered with his son, Todd, to continue his photography education mission through their company, Nettelhorst Images, Inc.    For information on Lou and Todd Nettelhorst's workshops, outings, online photo feedback series, private lessons, presentations and other activities, visit NettelhorstImages.com, NettelhorstImages on Facebook and Net_Images on Instagram.

Todd Nettelhorst (IL) – Photography Educator, Professional Photographer  Todd has had a passion for photography and videography much of his life. He started photographing at a very young age when his father gave him his first SLR camera. His appreciation of photography grew while photographing throughout the country during the family’s summer road trips. Todd’s path to becoming a professional photographer began after starting a family with his beautiful wife, Tambi. As he documented the honesty of his children’s lives, friends and family members began requesting his unique style for their families. His ability to capture un-posed, un-planned and spontaneous moments were much in demand.  Todd developed a keen eye for documenting the personality and expressions that bring out the “real life” of the subject in an image. Soon a variety of commercial clients were taking notice of his skills, as well. Todd has photographed a variety of events, architecture, engagements and products. Today, he continues to engage in commercial work with new and established clients.  In 2016, Todd partnered with his father, Lou Nettelhorst, as part of Nettelhorst Images, Inc. Todd enjoys bringing his charismatic energy, unique photographic perspective and deep passion for the visual arts to others by helping them explore and develop the best of their creative abilities through education.  As a photography educator, Todd uses his fresh perspective to help students see the “pictures within pictures.”  He is also delighted to share his explorations with phone photography and apps to create stunning visual images.    For information on Lou and Todd Nettelhorst's workshops, outings,  online photo feedback series, private lessons, presentations and  other activities, visit NettelhorstImages.com, NettelhorstImages on Facebook and Net_Images on Instagram.

PAINTING WITH PHOTOSHOP FOR BEGINNERS with Ellen Kawadler, Saturday May 2nd, 2020

PAINTING WITH PHOTOSHOP FOR BEGINNERS
with Ellen Kawadler, Award Winning Photographer, Presenter and Workshop Leader

Previous workshops have SOLD OUT!

Ever wanted to give your images a real painterly look without the use of plugins? Don’t have the patience to work on an image for days? Want the easy way out? Then this workshop is for you!
Yes, we will use brushes and we will paint our images but with the use of layers and selections the process will be simplified so anyone can paint like a pro and best of all complete your masterpiece in a short amount of time.

We will start from the very beginning by setting up your painting workspace, loading and setting options for the brushes, and using the mixer brush with different photoshop brushes for distinctive effects. You will learn how to paint a background from your image and different ways to change this up. Then we will complete a simple image from start to finish.
You will need to have Photoshop, preferably the most recent version, and some knowledge of selections and layers.

Please bring your laptops with the latest version of Photoshop CC installed and a tablet if you have one.

I will be providing an image that we will use for practice, information on downloading brushes and some other preconference materials. You will also receive the complete PowerPoint presentation loaded with step by step instructions and video tutorials.

Date: Saturday May 2nd, 2020

Place: Whitney Place, Great Room, 675 South Main St, Sharon, Ma 02067

#1 “Lightroom Crash Course” Scott Kelby (FL) If you want to get up & running fast on Lightroom Classic, this class will get you there. You’ll learn Scott’s back-up strategy, how to organize your images in an easy way that makes sense, & his step-by-step method for post-processing your images that will make your photo rock! You’ll be learning just the most important, most useful, and easiest way to get your Lightroom life in order. For all skill levels:  Perfect for those brand-new to Lightroom, or even for folks who have been using it for a few years now but want to take their skills to the next level. Laptops not necessary.

#2 "The Art of Seeing” with Frans Lanting (CA) In this instructive presentation, Frans Lanting will share his secrets for how he creates memorable images by applying key ingredients like subject, point of view, composition, light, moment and meaning to any photographic situation. You will learn how you can translate his concepts into creative photographs yourself. For all skill levels.

#3 Paralleling Still and Motion” Corey Rich (CA) Sponsored by Nikon. With today’s cameras, it has never been easier for contemporary storytellers to capture HD video in tandem with still images. But making that transition from still photography to recording video is not as simple as just hitting a button on your camera. Capturing both still & motion in parallel demands a specific approach and a dynamic way of thinking in order to achieve a solid body of still and video content expected from today’s storytellers. Corey will share over a decade of experience shooting still & motion in parallel and guide you through his approach. This course begins with conceptualizing an idea, and covers working through the pitfalls (and benefits) of wearing both a director’s and photographer’s hat at the same time, how to powerfully communicate a concept through the two distinct media, working alone vs. with a production crew, the benefit of going light-and-fast with smaller and better gear, and ultimately what it takes to powerfully communicate your story. For all skill levels.

#4 “Life-Size and Beyond: A Workshop in Macro Photography” Joey Terrill (CA) Sponsored by Nikon. Immerse yourself in the colors, textures & detail that's revealed through macro photography. In this hands-on shooting workshop (bring your camera) we'll be using colorful feathers, butterfly wings, flower petals, & other subjects as we experiment with a variety of macro techniques. Our emphasis will be on choosing interesting subjects, composing for maximum impact to reveal every intricacy. The process of composing & lighting can be calming and meditative as you progress, or adrenaline-filled as you see the final result begin to emerge. The pictures are always revealing in their detail & the creative process is deeply satisfying to experience. We'll have access to all the equipment needed for macro photography, as well as some exotic gear that makes high-magnification captures much easier. We'll use helpful tools for positioning subjects, discuss some devices used to precisely move the camera, employ some readily available backgrounds & discuss optional camera & lens settings. Everyone will have ample time to create several new images. I hope you'll come magnify the world with us! All skill levels.

#5 “Exposure Blending with Luminosity Masks” Greg Benz (MN) (laptop*) For people looking to use luminosity masks to extract more color & detail from their photos & is comfortable with the basics of layers/masks in Photoshop. This course covers: Blending Multiple Files, Multi-processing single RAW files, Optimal Shooting RAW for Blending, Getting Great Color, Fixing Halos & Tree Edges, Sky replacement, Luminosity Masks & Selections. No experience with luminosity masks required, but this is not for people who have never used Photoshop. You may choose to share a computer with a friend/spouse or just come and take notes/follow along. If you bring your computer, you are expected to have Photoshop CS6 or CC pre-loaded and activated on your laptop. Information about downloading the free Lumenzia panel or purchasing one at a discounted price will be sent. Intermediate-to-Advanced

#6 “Photoshop: The Power of Contrast: Magic in Your Hands” Lisa Langell (AZ) (laptop*) Get ready for a game-changer! Whether you are controlling for contrast in your exposures themselves, and/or in post-processing, this fun, informative & interactive session will help you learn the tricks & techniques necessary to make your images go from drab to fab! Learn techniques that can be accomplished in-the-field as well as during post-processing that will amaze you. Explore before-and-after examples & teach you how you can do so with your own images simply & effectively. This is NOT Introduction to Photoshop. Topics include layers, simple masking, adjustment brushes in Adobe Camera Raw (Lightroom works very similarly). You may choose to share a computer with a friend/spouse or just come and take notes/follow along. If you bring your computer, Photoshop CS6 or CC must be pre-loaded and activated. Intermediate

#7 “Maximum Depth of Field– Using Focus Stacking and Bracketing” Peter Baumgarten (Ontario, Canada) Anyone who has worked with a macro lens recognizes that it can be a real challenge to achieve a sharp subject from front to back and still maintain a nice, soft, defocused background. In fact, with most subjects it's an impossible task. Enter focus stacking or focus bracketing. The concept is simple. Take a series of photos with each one being focused at a slightly different point on your subject. Olympus has automated the process so that you can achieve the maximum depth of field and get the final stacked image – all in your Olympus camera! This same concept can also be used to create landscape images with incredible depth of field. Join Olympus Visionary Peter Baumgarten for this hands-on workshop on how to use the focus stacking & bracketing feature built into Olympus OMD cameras. You will learn the basics of focus stacking and bracketing, the camera controls that will guarantee better success and some post-processing options available for focus bracketing. This feature can be used for both macro & landscape shooting situations. Bring: camera, SD card, Tripod. Olympus will have cameras & lenses available to try focus stacking in-camera. For all skill levels, but you must be able to stand during this workshop.

#8 “A Morning with the Butterflies and Flowers at Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory and Gardens” Kathleen Clemons (ME) Sponsored by Lensbaby. Spend a fun morning photographing at Magic Wings before it opens to the public. This is an ideal time as the butterflies are resting, making them easier to photograph. Bring a traditional macro lens & borrow a Lensbaby. Whether you recently bought a new Lensbaby, are thinking about getting one, or your Lensbaby is sitting in a closet this class is for you. Participants must drive to 281 Greenfield Rd, South Deerfield, MA (~12 miles from UMass). Arrive at 6:45am. Shoot 7-9am; Informal image review & breakfast afterwards (breakfast not included in cost). For all skill levels; you must be able to stand during this workshop.

#9A/B “Photograph Birds of Prey & Raptors” Joe & Mary Ann McDonald (PA) Sponsored by Olympus. Get advice on light,  exposure composition, depth of field, shutter speed, auto focusing modes, focusing tips, etc. During the shoot you will be able to try Olympus cameras/lenses. Two 10-person sessions, 9A: 8:30-10am and 9B: 10-11:30am. Outside (weather permitting). For all skill levels. You must be able to stand during this workshop. Participants must drive to the workshop (~12 miles from UMass).

#10 Camera Basics: Mode, Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, etc. Chane Cullens MNEC (CT). Learn how to use aperture & shutter priority modes, exposure compensation, ISO, shallow versus deep depth of field, blurred & frozen motion, properly exposed dark backgrounds & a properly exposed bright background during this hands-on workshop. Bring your mirrorless or dSLR camera & manual. For beginners.

#11 Get Creative with Nik/DxO Software (laptops) Kate Silvia (SC) We will concentrate on three Nik programs: Viveza, Color Efex Pro & Silver Efex Pro, spending time with each program, learning how to best take advantage of their strengths and possibilities. We'll incorporate them into our overall workflow both from Lightroom & Photoshop and have a lot of fun. For intermediate photo processing level photographers. You may share a computer with a friend or just come and follow along. If you bring your computer, you are expected to have Photoshop CS6 or PS CC and Nik/DxO pre-installed.
