Fall 2014 Inter-club Print Competition

Reported by Arthur S. Vaughan, MNEC
NECCC Print Chairman

The fall 2014 inter-club print competition, hosted by the Manchester Camera Club, was held on Monday, November 10th at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Manchester, N.H. Megan Brown served as the event organizer and coordinator. The judges for this competition were: Marian Cicel (a local fine art photographer), Collette Crisp (former president of Photographers Forum and former office manager/photographer assistant for a commercial photographer), and Phyllis Meinke (past president and current vice-president of the Lakes Region camera Club). For the fall competition a total of 166 prints were submitted...  48 class “A”, 30 class “B”, and 88 Color. Participating were 22 clubs...  12 in class “A”, 8 in class “B”, and 22 in Color. A total of 28 prints received awards...  7 class “A”, 6 class “B” and 15 in Color. Due to the unusually narrow point spread there were multiple ties in each division resulting in no HM’s being awarded.

35th Annual George W. Glennie Nature Salon

35th Annual George W. Glennie Nature Salon

The Merrimack Valley Camera Club (MVCC) will be conducting the 35th Annual Glennie Nature Salon.  This salon is open to all camera clubs and photographic associations worldwide.  Last year's salon had almost 1,000 images from 85 clubs from around the world.
This is a premier, international all-nature competition known for its diversity of subjects which range from animals to botany to landscapes.  Among the animal categories, birds and mammals are usually well represented, but each year there are also large numbers of invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians and marine / freshwater entries too.
Entries will be open starting on December 15, 2014 and closing on February 4, 2015.  Judging will be on February 21st at the Greater Lynn Photographic Society and the public is welcome.
The Glennie Nature Salon presents awards to both clubs and individual images.  Each club can submit up to 10 entries, with no more than 2 entries allowed from any one maker.  The top 5 clubs are recognized based upon the total score of their entries.   Last year's Diversity Awards also recognized the top 5 clubs with submissions in at least 6 of the 8 Glennie categories. Individual awards include Best of Show, Best Wildlife, and Best Image in 8 different categories.  We also present subcategory and honor awards based upon the number of entries.
The Glennie Nature Salon is a digital only competition.  We will be following the revised PSA guidelines for nature competitions which allow for "Digital Realism".  Submission is on-line and entries fees can be charged to a credit card via PayPal.

Complete rules, entry information, and more details can be found on the MVCC web site under the Interclub Competition section at (http://mvcameraclub.org/comp-interclub/comp-interclub-01-glennie.htm).  If you have any questions email us at glennie@mvcameraclub.org

Greater Lynn Model Shoot

Hello to everyone:

Greater Lynn had a very successful model shoot on November 16.  There were only two issues that need addressing. First, photographers who signed in did not include their e-mail address. Second, Linda Son’s e-mail address is in error and needs to be corrected. If the photographers who participated in the model shoot I will gladly send them Linda’s correct e-mail address.

Cheers,

Jim Gallagher

Favorite Places
By Paul Smith, Editor
NECCC Bulletin

Acadia National Park Mt. Desert Island, ME

I have visited and photographed at Acadia National Park several times over the years. It has not been until the past year that I have discovered what a truly magnificent park it is. The past 2 Octobers have been nothing short of amazing.

I have been treated to virtually all of the amazing diverse light and weather conditions that one could hope for in a short 5 day visit (5 days each of the last 2 years). For a relatively small mountain, Cadillac Mountain, (1530 feet) can offer a wide range of weather patterns. The most common seem to be fog and wind.

Last year just before and during sunset, I was privileged to photograph low lying clouds/fog beneath me. This year just before and during sunset, wind swept fog was painted beautifiul hues and colors by the setting sun.

The Park Loop Road which follows the coast is an amazing place to photograph any time of the day or night. The weather can vary from bright and sunny, to cold and foggy (and everything in between).

My favorite season to photograph Acadia is in the fall. The colors typically peak a little later than you would expect, around the third week of October. Being surrounded by the ocean, the climate is a bit more moderate, accounting for the delay in the display of colors. This year was an exception, as the peak seemed to be around the 2nd week of October. You can find splendid color throughout the park. There are many areas of colorful birch trees, so beautiful with their white bark and hues of yellow and red.

Another very photogenic area of the park is Jordan Pond. If you do go there, make plans for a light lunch at the Jordan House with their world famous popovers (and rightly so). A great sunset location is Bass Harbor Light. Be careful if go here, you must make your way over very uneven rocks. Also, make sure you know what the tide is doing before you go. This year, I got hit by a rogue wave (but, it was well worth it)!!

I would like to make "Favorite Places" a regular feature of the NECCC Bulletin. I am asking everyone in the NECCC family to share some of your favorite New England places. Just send to: bulletin@neccc.org

A small gallery of Acadia National Park images can be found in the current bulletin FALL14

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE PROPOSER

The NECCC Honors are awarded in recognition of contribution to the advancement of the art and science of photography in the New England area. Quality of character, administrative activities, service through lecturing, teaching, judging and writing are as important as an outstanding competition record. Before proposing a candidate, weigh carefully the responsibility you are assuming and your duty to the New England Camera Club Council. These considerations should transcend any desire you may have to do a favor for someone. Do not submit an application unless you are fully convinced that the candidate’s qualifications are far above average. Try to give the committee a verbal picture of the candidate as an individual as well as a photographer. Present all facts in a brief and concise manner, avoiding exaggeration. List the candidate’s qualifications under each of these general headings:
1. Administrative activities
2. (A) Lecturing, (B) Judging, (C) Teaching, (D) Writing
3. (A) Photographic Achievements, (B) Exhibition Record, (C) Competition Awards
4. Other qualifications

PROPOSALS MUST BE LIMITED TO FIVE 8-1/2" X 11" PAGES, ONE SIDE ONLY

President's Message By Dennis Goulet

President's Message By Dennis Goulet

This year’s NECCC Conference is now a memory, although for me, as the conference chair for the last two years, is mostly a blur. There were so many things for me to do during the event that, like last year, I was only able to attend one presentation. Based on the previous year’s comment sheets, I made changes to this year’s speaker sessions which were not appreciated by all the attendees.

It is difficult to know the likes and dislikes of all the attendees. Only 40% or so of the attendees provide an evaluation sheet or writing an email to me telling me what they liked and what they didn’t like. A slight improvement over last year, it’s the only thing we have to go on. We are planning an online survey or two which will be sent to previous conference attendees asking specific questions which will hopefully provide us with the information to continue to improve the conference and provide the activities that are most valuable to our attendees.

Next year, our 70th Annual Photography Conference will prove to be one “not to miss”. The campus construction in the area we use near the pond and in the conference center will be completed, freeing up the areas we have used in the past for outdoor activities. Antoinette Gombeda and Susan Mosser have already started planning next year’s conference; and I’m confident it will be special for our 70th
anniversary.

I will be reviewing the services NECCC provides the member clubs and to their members and will contact club presidents to ask how they are organized, conduct their activities, and manage competition images. What can we do to help your club be beneficial to your members? Hopefully, we can establish a set of “lessons learned” that may benefit other clubs. Hopefully we can identify services that NECCC can provide to help small and large clubs alike.

Information is the key to making effective improvements for the future of the New England Camera Clubs. I’m hoping you will all find the time to answer requests for information.

I look forward to another successful year working with the NECCC officers and all of you. Please feel free to contact me with questions and/or suggestions. You can reach me at NECCC2014@comcast.net

We hope to see all of you at next year's conference!!

2014 - 2015 Model Shoots at Greater Lynn Photographic Association

2014 - 2015 Model Shoots at Greater Lynn Photographic Association

On three Sundays in the 2014 – 2015 camera club year Greater Lynn will hold model shoots. The three dates are November 16, 2014,  January 25, 1015, and March 22, 2015. Each shoot will begin at 10:00 A.M. and close at 3:00 P.M. We will slow down during lunch time, but we will not stop. There are six models that are scheduled for each of the shoots. Please be cognizant that most of the models are in the beginning stages of their modeling careers and therefore, have a measure of patience when asking for a specific pose.

Photographers are expected to take ONLY THREE SHOTS in the time frame of two minutes then move to the back of a line. This time frame is instituted to keep the three lines (portrait, high key and low key) moving. Also, it is vitally important to be polite to the models. Introduce yourself and talk to her by her name and e-mail address that will be on a 5 X 7 card attached to the main light stand. PLEASE say, “ thank you,” when you have taken your three shoots and hand the pocket wizard to the next person in line.

The cost of the Model Shoot is: $10.00 for Greater Lynn members and $15.00 for invited guests.

We look forward to seeing you there,
The Greater Lynn Model Committee
